STATWATCH : Drezner of Calabasas Piling Up Points, Rebounds in Record-Setting Quantities

Senior Jon Drezner needs 27 points to become the second player to score 1,000 career points at Calabasas.

Drezner, who is averaging 23.2 points a game, has at least two games to accomplish the feat. Calabasas, which plays its final league game Friday at Santa Paula, has qualified for the Southern Section 2-A Division basketball playoffs.

Steve Ward, who plays at Valley College, holds the school record with 1,872 points, set during 1984-86.

Drezner has 973 points in 71 games and needs five to surpass Paul Holcomb as the school’s second-leading scorer.

Although he will not set the school scoring record, Drezner does hold three school records for rebounding.

Last season, Drezner set the single-game mark with 34 against Santa Paula and the single-season record with 335.

Earlier this season, Drezner broke the career record of 547 rebounds set by Jon Perlstein during the 1984-86 seasons. Drezner has 670 rebounds.

Shooting: Oak Park’s John Sloan made 24 of 27 free throws in three games last week, including 13 of 14 against Carpinteria. . . . St. Genevieve has hit 72.8% of its free throws in the past six games after shooting 49.5% in the first 14 games. The Valiants have made 110 of 151 during that span while opponents have made 42 of 65. Senior point guard Mike Cassidy has led St. Genevieve’s resurgence, making 35 of 43 (81.4%) in the past seven games.

Thousand Oaks senior Kevin Martin scored 82 points in three Lancer victories last week, including 36 in a double overtime win over Westlake. Martin is averaging 21.7 points a game. . . . Six Royal players are averaging between 7 and 11 points a game. J. P. Ouellette leads the Highlanders with a 10.8 average.

Rebounding: David Sanger of Montclair Prep, who is averaging more than 11 rebounds a game, had 43 rebounds in his past three games starting this week’s games.

Winning streaks: Bell-Jeff (14-6) and Montclair Prep (13-6) both entered Tuesday night’s games with seven-game winning streaks.

Cleveland extended its streak to 13 wins after defeating Kennedy on Tuesday night.
