The Saddleback High School boys’ soccer team clinched the Sea View League title with a 1-0 win over host Newport Harbor Wednesday.

The only goal of the game was scored 25 minutes into the first half, when junior defender Beto Zavala kicked a shot from midfield that bounced over the head of Sailor goalie Ken Wilcutt.

In the second half, both teams had numerous scoring opportunities, including a penalty kick by Newport Harbor’s Tom Walker, with eight minutes to play, which was saved by Saddleback goalie Miguel Ochoa.

Ochoa finished with eight saves, including one in the final three minutes of the match. Wilcutt finished with six saves for Newport Harbor (11-5-4, 4-2-3).

“We dominated the first half,” said Saddleback Coach Mel Silva. “But as time went on, we got nervous, I think because we have a mostly freshman and sophomore team.”

Saddleback, which recorded its fifth shutout in a row, starts only one senior, Carlos Zavala.

“They’ve been working very hard,” Silva said of his team. “They’re playing well together.”

The win, coupled with Estancia’s loss to University, gives the Roadrunners (15-5-2, 7-1-1) their first league championship since 1982, when Silva was a sophomore at the school.
