Girls’ Basketball : Foothill Defeats Canyon for Another League Title

Tanya Foxe scored 21 points as Foothill High School defeated Canyon, 51-37, to clinch the Century League girls’ basketball championship Thursday night at Foothill.

It was the seventh consecutive Century League title for Foothill, which has won 63 consecutive league games.

Foothill led, 13-11, at the end of the first quarter but outscored Canyon, 19-9, in the second quarter to take a 32-20 lead. Foxe scored nine points in the quarter. Foxe also had a game-high 15 rebounds.

Ashley Selman added 11 points for Foothill (15-8, 10-0). Keri Erkenback scored 13 for Canyon (15-8, 8-2), which finished in second.

In other Century League games:

Santa Ana 51, Villa Park 44--Trina Bruce scored 16 points to lead Santa Ana, which finished third in league. Gracie Lopez had 10 points for Santa Ana (11-8, 6-4). Stacy Shimota scored 10 points for Villa Park (2-20, 0-10).

Santa Ana Valley 51, El Modena 48--Francesca Rumps scored 21 points and had 19 rebounds to lead Santa Ana Valley at El Modena. Maria Guerrero scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds and Dominique Rumps had 16 rebounds for Santa Ana Valley (8-14, 3-7). Ginger Poat scored 21 points and Mindy McFann 18 for El Modena (3-7 in league).

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 93, Bishop Amat 43--Janet Rensing scored 21 points as host Mater Dei (20-6, 9-1) opened a 27-1 first-quarter lead. Cori Martin scored 16, Jennifer Swander 14 and Claudia Morris 12 for Mater Dei.

In the Empire League:

Katella 47, Loara 43--Joni Easterly scored 17 points to lead visiting Katella (16-8, 10-0), which won the league for the second consecutive year.

Esperanza 63, El Dorado 37--Jennifer Harney scored 18 points and Kelli Dillon 16 for visiting Esperanza (12-12, 5-5). Leading, 28-22, at halftime, Esperanza outscored El Dorado, 17-7, to take a 46-29 lead after three quarters. Eleoner Chen scored 16 points for El Dorado.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 47, Buena Park 44--Sabryna Welch scored a rebound basket with 15 seconds left to break a 44-44 tie for host Fullerton (16-6, 6-2). Fullerton added a free throw with two seconds left. Welch, a senior center, scored 17 points and had 15 rebounds. Jennifer Comstock added 14 for Fullerton.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 75, Rancho Alamitos 18--Sue Paulson scored 24 points and Donna Gondringer had 19 points and 10 rebounds for La Quinta. La Quinta (21-3, 14-0) led, 29-0, after the first quarter and 44-7 at the half. Jenny Newsome scored 14 points for Rancho Alamitos.

Santiago 43, Pacifica 29--Carolyn Rodriguez scored 14 points to lead host Santiago, which finished second in league. Santiago (16-5, 11-3) lead, 12-2, after the first quarter. Robin Caires and Marie Lupercia scored 10 points each for Santiago. Teri Goolsby scored 12 points for Pacifica.

Kennedy 38, Bolsa Grande 36--Michelle Harris scored 18 points as host Kennedy held off a Bolsa Grande rally to clinch the league’s third playoff berth. Kennedy (10-10, 9-5) led, 26-17, after three quarters, but was outscored, 19-12, in the fourth quarter. Bolsa Grande had a chance to tie the score with three seconds left but turned the ball over. Liz Flores scored 15 points for Bolsa Grande. Rhonda Versteeg had 12 rebounds for Kennedy.

Los Amigos 37, Garden Grove 33--Wendi Gilbert scored 13 points to lead host Los Amigos (6-14, 6-8).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 63, Valencia 49--Aimee McDaniel scored 23 points and had 8 assists as Brea-Olinda clinched its seventh consecutive league championship. During the seven years, Brea-Olinda has won 61 of 62 league games. Susan Tousey, who played her first game after missing three weeks with ankle injury, scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds for Brea-Olinda, which is ranked No. 1 in the Orange County coaches’ poll. Lauren Rich scored 17 points for Valencia (8-2 in league). Leading, 13-9, after the first quarter, Brea-Olinda outscored Valencia, 24-12, to take a 37-21 halftime lead.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Woodbridge 52, Laguna Beach 28--Kathy Millat scored 17 points and had 10 steals to lead host Woodbridge (25-5, 9-1), which clinched the league championship Tuesday. Laguna Beach (7-8, 5-5) tied Costa Mesa for third place. The teams play Saturday at Woodbridge for the final playoff spot.

Orange 55, Costa Mesa 39--Alicia East had 14 points on 11-of-16 shooting for visiting Orange (9-9, 7-3). East also had 15 rebounds. Laurie Sallinger added 12 for Orange, which clinched second place with the victory. Sue Henderson had 11 points for Costa Mesa.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 49, Capistrano Valley 46--Jennifer Rohrig scored 14 points and Tricia Stringham 13 as the Diablos cliched the league championship at Capistrano Valley. Leading, 22-18, at halftime, Mission Viejo (21-5, 9-1) outscored Capistrano Valley, 14-8, to take a 36-26 lead. Holly Anderson scored 15 points for Capistrano Valley (18-6, 8-2), which finished second in league.

In a nonleague game:

Orange Lutheran 48, L.A. Lutheran 42--Kim Klatt scored 13 points as host Orange Lutheran (10-10) snapped L.A. Lutheran’s 14-game winning streak. Maricela Lopez scored 16 points for L.A. Lutheran (17-4).
