The problem was who would replace Tom Bonds, Cal Lutheran’s all-time leading passer.

After months of studying high school quarterback prospects who might be passed over by Division I schools, Coach Bob Shoup decided that the two he prized the most were Bill Gallis of Northview High in Covina and Tim Zeddies of Helix High in La Mesa, near San Diego.

Both are among the six players who have signed with the Kingsmen, including Helix wide receiver Todd Sheehan, Birmingham running back Marcel Sellers, running back Schon Branum of Monte Vista High in Danville, Calif., and linebacker Bill Glau from Gavilan College in Gilroy, Calif.

“We were in a real dilemma as to what we were going to do about our quarterback situation,” said Shoup who already has Moorpark College transfer Dan Nagelmann attending classes. “We have a couple of prospects on campus but nothing was definite. We have the athletes we wanted, now we’ll see how they fit in.”

Gallis, 6-3, 180 pounds, was named the Southern Section’s Eastern Conference player of the year after he led his team to a 12-1-1 record and the conference title. He passed for 1,461 yards and 16 touchdowns last season and finished his two-year varsity career with 3,358 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Zeddies (6-1, 175) missed three games because of a hairline fracture in his right foot but still managed to pass for 1,127 yards and 10 touchdowns in 9 games for a team that finished 8-3-1.

Sheehan (5-10, 165) caught 45 passes for 572 yards and 6 touchdowns and averaged 11.4 yards on punt returns and 36.5 on kickoff returns.

Sellers (5-6, 145) played in just five games last season while nursing a broken collarbone. He rushed for 492 yards (7.6 yards per carry) and scored 7 touchdowns.

Branum (5-11, 197) might play fullback and tailback at CLU. Last season, he rushed for 1,158 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Glau (6-2, 235) was his team’s leading tackler last season. He joins Gavilan teammates Richard Toll, a defensive lineman, and Ken Whitney, a tight end, who began attending classes at CLU on Feb. 1.

Shoup said the Kingsmen are still in the running for St. Bernard’s lineman David Banuelos (6-2, 260) and Marin College lineman Gerry Gauer (6-5, 260).
