Prep Soccer : Smith’s 3 Goals Give Canyon Win and League Title

Senior Craig Smith scored all three goals to lead Canyon High School to a 3-1 victory over Foothill Friday in a Century League boys’ soccer match at Canyon. With the victory, Canyon clinched the league title.

Freshman Chris Snitko had six saves for Canyon (17-4-3, 7-0-3). Snitko had 11 shutouts this season and five in league. Chris Lema had 11 saves for Foothill.

In another Century League game:

Villa Park 1, Santa Ana 0--Brian Wilson scored in the first half to lead Villa Park to victory at Santa Ana. Villa Park (17-7-1, 7-2-1) finished second in the league behind Canyon.

In the Empire League:

Katella 2, Loara 0--Ricardo Munoz and Rich Henry scored one goal each in the second half as host Katella clinched the league title. Katella also won the league championship in 1982 but had finished last each year since. Scott Bogardus had seven saves for Katella and Bill Norris had four saves for Loara.

Los Alamitos 4, Cypress 1--Mauricio Ingrassia and Tommy Ritchie each scored two goals to lead Los Alamitos (13-7-4, 5-3-2) at home.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 4, Trabuco Hills 1--Brian Beaman, Brian Slayvack, Juan Strutton and Robert Nichols scored to lead Laguna Hills at Trabuco Hills. Laguna Hills goalie Kevin Casagranda had five saves. Trabuco Hills goalie Brad Collins had 13 saves.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 5, University 1--Matt Tomlin scored two goals, and Graham Pierce, Brian Sheehy and Greg Dalton scored one each for visiting Corona del Mar (3-3-4 in league play). Kevin Kynoch scored for University. Brent Krum had four saves for Corona del Mar, and Hans Lin had five saves for University.

Newport Harbor 2, Tustin 0--David Woodruff had two goals to lead the Sailors (12-5-4, 5-2-3) at Tustin. Newport Harbor goalie Ken Wiulcut had five saves. The shutout was Newport Harbor’s sixth of the season.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 0, Mission Viejo 0--Capistrano Valley goalies David Kushmier and Daniel Lindblat combined for seven saves to help the Cougars at home. Capistrano Valley is 4-2-4 and clinched second place in the league. Mission Viejo, which had six saves from Doug Larsen, is the league champion.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 0, Edison 0--Marina won the Sunset League championship for the second consecutive year. Dave Buehring had five saves for his 11th shutout for Marina (13-8-3, 7-1-2) at Westminster High School.
