Toros Fall to Bakersfield
Being undersized finally caught up with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night, as the Toros fell to first-place Cal State Bakersfield, 63-53, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. basketball game at Dominguez Hills.
The game was a big one for the Toros (10-12, 4-6), who had knocked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo out of undisputed first place on Thursday night to get back into the conference playoff race.
Cal State Bakersfield (16-7, 8-2) did a good job of defending the Toros’ leading scorer, center Anthony Blackmon, by rotating centers Fred Jones and Neil Stephens.
They held Blackmon, who came into the game with a 17-point scoring average, to 10 shots while each having one good scoring half of his own.
The Roadrunners were effective on the offensive boards, creating many second shots. During a stretch in the second half, the Toros scored only five points in eight minutes after taking a 39-36 lead.
Dominguez Hills Toros had trouble getting the ball to Blackmon, who played the entire 40 minutes and wound up with a game-high 19 points.
Troy Price led Bakersfield with 18 and was followed by Stephens finished with 14. Jones wound up with nine points and eight rebounds.
The loss put the Toros in a must-win situation for the rest of the season to advance to the CCAA Tournament.
