Girls’ Athletes of the Week : BASKETBALL

With all the attention Chris Enger has received this season, Vista Coach Joe DeMaria has spent plenty of time trying to convince people that she is not just a big scorer--she’s too versatile to receive such a simple tag.

But after the junior center’s 41-point performance in last Thursday’s 63-57 victory over Mt. Carmel, which clinched the Palomar League title, DeMaria’s job will become more frustrating. Enger (6-4, 135) scored 23 of Vista’s 25 first-half points.

Earlier in the week, Enger had 22 points, 12 rebounds and 8 blocked shots in Vista’s 64-41 victory over Orange Glen. That’s the kind of game that is more indicative of Enger’s well-rounded style, DeMaria said.

“Being 6-4, people don’t believe that she gets up the floor as well as she does,” DeMaria said. “She is able to do it at both ends of the court. I think that is one of the keyes why Chris is so good. She blocks shots, gets the rebound, handles the ball well . . . she does just about everything. She had to do just about everything in that first half (against Mt. Carmel).”

SOCCER

Karen Nulty proved why she is one of the top scorers in the Metro Conference in a match against Mar Vista last week.

Nulty, a junior striker at Coronado, scored four goals in the 9-0 Metro-South Bay League victory. She has 17 goals on the season.

The victory helped keep Coronado in the race for the league title. Coronado is tied for second place with Marian. Hilltop is first.
