Girls’ Basketball : English Helps Esperanza Edge Norco, 55-51
Jamie English scored four points in overtime, including two free throws with 36 seconds left, to lead Esperanza High School to a 55-51 victory over Norco in a Southern Section 3-A wild-card girls’ basketball game at Esperanza.
The Aztecs (13-11) will play at Mission Viejo, which is seeded third, on Friday.
Norco (16-9) trailed, 49-47, when Bobbie White scored off an offensive rebound to tie the score. White finished with 16 points, as did teammate Kristin Crouch.
The score was tied, 24-24, at halftime, but Esperanza went ahead, 36-35, going into the final quarter.
Esperanza was led by Jennifer Harney, who scored 20 points, and Karin Davidson, who scored 15.
In a 2-A wild-card game:
Kennedy 60, Buena Park 54--Michelle Harris scored 29 points, 13 in the final quarter, as host Kennedy (12-10) rallied for the victory. Buena Park (10-14) led, 41-37, after three quarters, but Kennedy took the lead with four minutes left on a basket by Harris. Silvia Martinez scored 23 points for Buena Park. Kennedy will face third-seeded Edgewood on Friday in a first-round game.
