Mike Gilmore scored two first-half goals Friday as Capistrano Valley High School defeated El Dorado, 2-1, in the first round of the Southern Section 3-A boys’ soccer playoffs at Capistrano Valley.

Gilmore scored his first goal--his 17th of the season--seven minutes into the game.

Gilmore, a senior forward, split two El Dorado defenders and faced Ken Scott, El Dorado’s goalie, one-on-one. When Scott committed by diving toward Gilmore for the ball, Gilmore sidestepped him and scored.

Gilmore’s second goal at the 21-minute mark proved to be the game-winner for Capistrano Valley (15-6-6), which finished second in the South Coast League.

“I got a great header from Brian Langley which put me one-on-one with their goalie,” Gilmore said. “I went left and faked him out.”

But he almost missed. The ball rolled toward the left bar after he faked Scott and it looked as if it would roll out of bounds. Gilmore, however, caught it and scored with a left-footed kick to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

“That hurt,” said Ron Willms, Capistrano Valley coach. “We stopped fighting after that.”

And El Dorado (10-6-2), which finished second in the Empire League, started rallying.

After a free kick for El Dorado, Larry Queen was able to get the ball to Matt Hill, who scored from the left side with one minute remaining in the half.

Neither team scored in the second half.

Garey 1, El Toro 1--Garey advanced to the second round on penalty kicks, 4-3. Neither team scored in the first half, and Garey scored early in the second half to take a 1-0 lead. El Toro’s Scott Montory scored 20 minutes into the second half to tie the score, 1-1. The game tied after regulation, and neither team scored in the two overtimes. El Toro ends its season 8-6-4.

Katella 2, Miraleste 0--Ricardo Munoz and Al Flores scored in the second half for host Katella (13-2-7), the Empire League champion. Katella’s Scott Bogardus had one save, on Miraleste’s only shot. Miraleste finishes 8-8-2.

Mission Viejo 2, Chino 1--Jeff Jurgemeyer scored 20 minutes into the first half off an assist from Jegg Gagmon to give Mission Viejo a 1-0 lead at home. Gagmon scored 10 minutes later when he headed a ball in. Gagmon’s goal gave Mission Viejo (16-4-4) a 2-0 in the first half.
