Girls’ Basketball Playoffs

Thousand Oaks 62, Fountain Valley 61--Kami Bingler had a chance to tie the score when she was fouled after rebounding an errant Thousand Oaks’ shot with seven seconds left. She made the first but missed the second, allowing the Lancers to hold on in the Southern Section 4-A Division second-round game at Thousand Oaks.

Thousand Oaks went ahead by four points with two minutes to go on a basket by Kris Pederson and two free throws. Yvette Ybarra scored on Fountain Valley’s next possession to cut the Lancer lead to 62-60, setting the stage for Bingler.

“Fountain Valley played really well,” Thousand Oaks Coach Chuck Brown said. “I was really impressed with their overall play. We gave up a lot of points that we don’t normally give up.”

Senior center Barbara Tanner led the Lancers with 23 points and Pederson added 15.

Thousand Oaks (25-3), the Marmonte League champion, visits Buena on Friday in a quarterfinal game.

Newbury Park 78, Compton 63--Newbury Park used balanced scoring to advance to the quarterfinals in the Southern Section 4-A playoffs.

The Panthers (19-5) were led by Kristi Gellenbeck, who scored 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting. Also scoring in double figures for host Newbury Park were Marlo Cormier (18 points), Katie Krause (14 and 10 rebounds) and Chris Singer (15 and 12).

“The girls are starting to play their best ball of the year,” Newbury Park Coach Nori Parvin said. “And it’s coming at the right time.”

El Toro 66, Alemany 54--The Indians rallied from a 34-27 halftime deficit behind the hot shooting of Sylvia Castaneda, but the comeback fell short as Alemany (21-4) lost in a Southern Section 3-A second-round game at El Toro.

Castaneda, who scored 17 points, made 5 of 6 field-goal attempts in the third quarter to lead the short-lived Alemany (21-4) rally that put the Indians ahead, 44-41. Castaneda was 7 of 11 from the field and 1 of 3 from the free-throw line.

Schurr 57, Louisville 51--Schurr outscored the Royals, 16-5, in the last four minutes of the Southern Section 3-A second-round game at Louisville.

Louisville (13-13) led, 46-42, with four minutes left but Schurr went on a 7-0 run to take the lead. Andie Angulo’s block of a Alycia Schlisinger’s shot, followed by a Kim Ikeda three-point bomb, pulled Schurr to within 46-45.

Kam Inouye followed with a 19-foot basket to give the Spartans a 47-46 lead they never relinquished.

Westchester 74, Cleveland 49--Tricia Stafford scored a game-high 30 points to lead Westchester in a City 4-A game.
