Community College Roundup : Hamelin Drives in Eight to Lead Rancho Santiago

Bobby Hamelin had three hits, including his fifth home run of the season, and eight RBIs to lead Rancho Santiago College to an 18-6 victory over College of the Desert Thursday in the first round of the Riverside baseball tournament.

Hamelin, a sophomore transfer from UCLA, singled in a run in the first, walked with the bases loaded in the third, hit a three-run double in the fifth and a three-run home run in the eighth.

Kraig Washington had four hits and Todd Lloyd, Rich Gonzales and Mike Gonzales had two hits and two RBIs each for Rancho Santiago (9-0), which had 19 hits.

In the Chaffey Tournament:

Saddleback 7, Rio Hondo 6--Saddleback scored twice in the seventh to tie the score, 6-6, and once in the eight for the first-round victory. Chris Latham and Keith Hatch singled in the eighth and Latham scored on an error off a ball hit by Carl Watkins. Jason Nigro had a sacrifice and Matt Lundin an RBI single in the seventh.

In the Delta Tournament:

Orange Coast 7, Modesto 3--Jason Young had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Pirates to a first-round victory. Darrell Connor had two hits and an RBI and Craig Nixon added a hit and an RBI for OCC (11-4-1).

In nonconference baseball:

Golden West 10, Southwestern 4--Tom Thobe (3-0) pitched six-plus innings and allowed six hits and had six strikeouts for host Golden West. Bill Baird pitched the final three innings for his first save.

Golden West (6-3) scored six runs in the first on four hits and three walks off starter and loser Edward Magdaleno (1-1). Joe Aversa had a two-run single in the first for Golden West, and teammate Brooks Peters had a two-run pinch-single in the eighth.

In South Coast Conference volleyball:

Golden West 3, Westmont 0--Dean Cunningham had 13 kills and Lee Moore 11 for visiting Golden West (2-1).
