Toros Beat Eagles, Keep Hopes Alive

Weirdness aside, things pretty much went as expected Thursday night at Cal State Los Angeles where the host Eagles were taking on Cal State Dominguez Hills, which is still in the hunt for a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. playoff berth.

For the Toros to earn that fourth playoff spot, they must beat Cal State Northridge on Saturday and hope Cal State L. A. can upset Chapman.

The Toros did their part on Thursday with a 67-59 victory over the Eagles.

Chapman College, also vying for that fourth spot, had to lose to Northridge, which it did. But the Toros had to transcend serious officiating boners to record their sixth conference win.

Center Anthony Blackmon was pegged with a technical foul on the opening play of the second half for hanging on the rim, even though the Toros’ center made a one-handed slam. Secondly, teammate Roger Coleman went to the line to shoot two free throws. Strangely, after Coleman made the first attempt, the ball was handed over to the Eagles.

Following heated protests from the Toros’ bench, play was stopped and Coleman went back to the line for a second free throw.
