SportsScope : Hot Lions Baseball Team Takes 11-game Streak to Hawaii

The Loyola Marymount baseball team, winner of 11 straight games and rated seventh in national polls, travels to Honolulu for a three-game series with Hawaii today through Sunday. The Lions (13-2), are led by third baseman Don Sparks and outfielder Travis Tarchione.

Cal State Dominguez Hills’ baseball team plays at Pepperdine at 2 today, then has a home double-header at noon Saturday against Azusa Pacific. The Toros (3-5) are at home Tuesday at 2:30 against Cal State Long Beach. The Toros continue to smack the ball, with six starters batting .378 or higher and a team batting average of .327, but the team that led the nation in defense last year has been shoddy this season with 22 errors. First baseman Jeff Sears is at .378 with 4 home runs and 14 runs batted in. Third baseman Ruben Jauregui is hitting .500 with 10 RBI. Relief pitcher-outfielder Chris Haslock is hitting .462 with 2 homers.

UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion will be the site for the annual Reebok Volleyball Classic, matching four of the nation’s top five men’s teams, today and Saturday. Today, top-ranked USC (15-1) meets No. 2 Penn State (8-1) at 6 p.m., followed by No. 3 UCLA (16-2) playing No. 5 Pepperdine (5-3) at 8. The losers will play the 6 p.m. game Saturday, with the championship at 8.

The ninth annual Tom Sullivan St. Patrick’s Day 10-K run and three-mile stride will be held March 13 at Del Amo Fashion Center. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. Proceeds go to education for blind children and their families. For entry form and information, call 378-1955.

The Southern California Slo-Pitch Softball Assn. will hold its fourth annual Spring Classic Slo-Pitch Tournament for men’s C and D teams March 19 at South Gate Park in South Gate.
