SCC Hangs On to Win, 93-91

Southern California College withstood two last-second shots and went on to defeat Heritage Christian, 93-91, in an NAIA District III men’s basketball playoff game Tuesday in Costa Mesa.

John Mounce missed a free-throw attempt with 10 seconds left, but Heritage Christian missed a shot. As time appeared to run out, the ball went out of bounds off an SCC player. But the buzzer never sounded and the officials put one second back. Heritage Christian inbounded the ball but missed another shot.

Southern California College will play Westmont Saturday in the semifinals of the NAIA District III men’s basketball playoffs, not Biola, as reported in The Times Wednesday. SCC and Westmont will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday at Whittier College.

SCC made its first 10 shots, including eight layups, and led, 53-43, at the half. Heritage Christian tied it, 65-65, with 13:53 left but never led.

Jeff Bickmore scored 20, Todd Dixon and Phil Hill 18 and Mounce 12 for SCC (18-13), which plays in the semifinals Saturday at Whittier College against Biola.

Dave Kirksey, who played at Cypress College last season, led Heritage Christian (14-14) with 23 points and Mark Kraatz added 21.
