No. 2-seeded University City High School hoped to defeat Ramona by using finesse in Wednesday’s San Diego Section girls’ 2-A soccer semifinal game at Torrey Pines High School.

But early on, University City realized that finesse might not be the answer. A few minutes into the game, the Centurions decided to mix things up with more physical Ramona, and it paid off with a 3-2 double-overtime victory.

University City (18-2-2) advanced to Saturday’s championship game against No. 1-seeded San Pasqual (21-2-1), which edged University of San Diego High School, 1-0, in the second game.

Ramona finished 16-4-2, USDHS 16-7-1.

University City’s winning goal was Sonja Munevar’s second of the game with just 5 minutes remaining in the second sudden-death period.

“We threw strategy out the window when they started domination in the first half,” said Ray Weigand, University City assistant coach.

Ramona’s Isabel Diaz scored the first goal just 6 minutes into the game. After Ramona failed on a couple of chances to increase the lead, Munevar tied it with 17:55 remaining in the first half.

University City’s Lisa Gorog made it 2-1 when she scored from 10 yards out with 37:17 left in the second half, but Ramona’s JoAnn Hamilton evened the score with 13:20 to play.

In the second game, all San Pasqual needed was Karin Lindsay’s goal, which she scored 4 minutes into the second half, and plenty of defense for its 19th shutout.
