SportsScope : Top Surfers Compete in Manhattan

The $15,000 B. A. Pro-Am Surfing Championships begin at 7 a.m. today at Manhattan Beach Pier.

Some of the nation’s best surfers and body-borders are entered.

Scott Dailey of El Segundo and Chris Frohoff, Ted Robinson and Kelly Gibson all of Manhattan Beach head a field of 144 surfers. Thirty-two body borders will compete for $3,000 in prize money.

The contest, the third leg of the United States pro tour, runs through Sunday.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, preparing to open defense of its California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball title, will play at UC Irvine at 1 p.m. Saturday and at the University of San Diego at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, then open CCAA play Wednesday at home against Cal State Los Angeles at 2:30 p.m. This year’s Toros (6-8) continue to hit better than past teams, with a .319 average and 18 home runs, but have had fielding problems. The Toros, who led the nation in fielding last season with only 57 errors, have committed 36 so far. Among the hot batters are outfielder Bob Gonzales with a nine-game hitting streak and catcher Mike McCarthy, who was 7 for 14 last week after a 2 for 22 start. Third baseman Ruben Jauregui is hitting .463.

UCLA, ranked fifth in men’s volleyball, travels to Stanford for a key conference match tonight, then will play a nonleague match at UC Davis on Saturday before returning to play host to Loyola Marymount on Wednesday. The Bruins, 18-3, are 4-2 in the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. Stanford is 18-10 and 3-4. Loyola is in last place and is winless in the WIVA.
