Long Beach Poly’s Antonio McKee, who competed in only 16 matches this season, became the state wrestling champion at 138 pounds Saturday, defeating Terry Watts of Caruthers, 6-3, in overtime.

McKee, wrestling in the CIF State Wrestling Tournament at the University of the Pacific, missed most of the 1987-1988 season, scholastically ineligible.

McKee, a senior, trailed Watts, 7-6, as time was running out in the match.

But Watts, who defeated McKee in the early rounds of last season’s State tournament, was called for a one-point stalling penalty. That tied the score at 7-7, and McKee went on to win. Antioch High, located 40 miles east of Oakland, won the team championship with a score of 89.5. Antioch qualified six wrestlers for the State tournament. Capistrano Valley placed second with 66 points. Capistrano Valley’s Mike Phillips won his second straight State championship at 145 pounds, defeating Aaron Zubia of Cabrillo High in Lompoc, 14-5.

Arroyo’s Marcos Carranza defeated Rosemead’s Robert Kawamura, 5-4, to win the 112-pound championship.

Woodbridge High’s Heath Sims, a junior, defeated San Clemente’s Brett Fry, 8-3, to win the 132-pound championship.
