College Roundup : Cal State Fullerton Stays on Winning Track, Routs Pepperdine, 12-3

Cal State Fullerton used a seven-run second inning to defeat Pepperdine, 12-3, Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game at Pepperdine.

Fullerton (18-8) has won 13 of its last 15 games.

Mark Razook singled home two runs to start the rally in the second and Rex Peters, who had two hits and scored two runs, hit a two-run double to make it 4-0. After a walk to Shane Flores, Mike Ross followed with a three-run home run.

Flores, a senior from Huntington Beach High School, went 4 for 4 and scored 2 runs. Brent Mayne went 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI.

Danny DeVille (2-0) pitched six innings, struck out three, walked two and gave up two runs on three hits. It was DeVille’s first start after 10 appearances from the bullpen.

In Golden State Athletic Assn. baseball:

Southern California College 2, Azusa Pacific 1--Mike Frei and Eric Gasner had back-to-back doubles in the ninth to break a 1-1 tie for SCC (7-13, 4-1) at home. Joe Holden had squeezed in a run in the six for SCC and Mike Deushane pitched a complete game for the victory. Azusa is 17-3, 3-1.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Cal State Northridge 3, Chapman 2--Cal State Northridge (9-17 overall, 1-1 in the CCAA) scored a run in the top of the ninth to defeat Chapman (13-11-1, 2-2) at Hart Park. The score was tied, 2-2, when Northridge loaded the bases and Leon Gilmore was able to score on a passed ball by Chapman catcher Steve Guidice.

The loss stopped Chapman’s six-game winning streak. Rob Scott hit a two-run home run and Leo Ramirez (2-4) got the victory for Northridge. Paul Swingle hit a home run for Chapman and Jim Bennett (2-2) took the loss.

In nonconference baseball:

Loyola Marymount 15, UC Irvine 0--Loyola (20-7) hammered the Anteaters for 21 hits at Irvine, scoring 10 runs in the fifth inning. Jeff Haack (2-5) took the loss, giving up 11 hits and 9 runs in 4 innings. Mike Parrott replaced Haack with one out in the fifth and gave up five more hits and six runs before Shane Rhodes came in to get the last two outs.

Loyola center fielder Brian Turang was 3 for 3, with a home run, a double, a single and 5 RBIs, and teammate Rick Allen was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs. Irvine (17-13-1) managed just three hits.

In the United States International University golf tournament:

UC Irvine 909, Las Vegas 911, Cal State Northridge 917--Price Shoemaker shot a 7-over-par 223 to tie for second place and lead Irvine to the championship of the two-day, 54-hole tournament at San Luis Rey Downs in San Diego. Steve Puck (225) tied for sixth and Craig Inba (229) tied for 13th for Irvine.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Kansas 2--UC Irvine (13-3 overall, 2-0 in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.) won its sixth straight match as Mark Kaplan defeated John Falbo, 7-5, 6-4 at UC Irvine. Irvine is ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. poll.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Yale 5, UC Irvine 4--UC Irvine (13-5) was 2-4 after singles and could not pull out a sweep of the doubles to come back against Yale (5-2) at Irvine.

In nonconference volleyball:

Chapman 3, Pacific Christian 0--Erich Schlitz had 13 kills for host Chapman (7-6), which won, 15-4, 15-6, 15-11. Pacific Christian is 0-4.
