Lincoln High School had no match in the Southern California Regional of the state tournament.

Lincoln ran away from its competition, and leading the race was forward Carl Gaines.

Gaines kept Lincoln on the run by scoring 20 points on 10-for-18 shooting in an 80-68 victory over Lemoore in Saturday’s regional final at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

He had 21 points in a runaway 88-64 victory over Golden West in the semifinals.

Gaines’ playing time was reduced by foul trouble in the San Diego Section final against Ramona, a game the Hornets held on to win, 71-63.

Sean Rees has started the 1988 baseball season as strongly as he finished last year’s.

Rees threw a no-hitter in a 6-0 victory over Hilltop in the season opener for Mission Bay.

“He’s only going to get stronger as the season goes on,” Mission Bay Coach Dennis Pugh said.

Rees followed his no-hitter with a two-hitter Tuesday in a 6-1 victory over Helix.

Rees was named the Western League co-player of the year last year, although he started the season slowly because of a minor bout with tendinitis.
