Share

Lest anyone forget Simi Valley’s Don MacLean, the 6-10 senior center has left his name scrawled all over the Pioneer basketball record book.

In his three seasons, MacLean set a slew of records. They are:

Single-game high--52 pts.

Season scoring--1,008 pts.

Career scoring--2,343 pts.

Successive free throws--45.

Season field-goal--67.0%.

Career field-goal--63.0%.

Season scoring avg.--31.5.

Career scoring avg.--26.3.

Career rebounds--1,120.

MacLean, who scored in double figures in all but 1 game in 3 seasons, also ranks fifth in the Southern Section in season and career scoring and eighth in career rebounds.

Add Simi Valley: Senior forward Shawn DeLaittre ranks among the school leaders in several categories. He’s second in career scoring (1,704), career field goals (623) and field-goal percentage (56.7). He’s third in career rebounds (742) and fourth in scoring average (19.1). Butch Hawking, a 6-2 senior point guard, set school records for assists in a game (17), assists in a season (271), career assists (435), three-pointers in a game (6) and career and season three-pointers (83). Hawking’s 271 assists are sixth on the Southern Section single-season list.

More records: When L. A. Baptist lost to Bell-Jeff, 60-52, in the semifinals of the Southern Section 1-A Division basketball playoffs, the high school careers of James Hoback and Mike Wise ended. Hoback and Wise were both three-year varsity lettermen and each holds at least one school career record. Hoback, who averaged 17.1 points and 9.7 rebounds a game this season, is the leader in rebounds (504, 7.8 avg.), and is second in scoring with 678 points (10.4). Wise, who averaged 14.2 points and 6.6 assists a game this season, is No. 1 in both assists (325, 4.6) and steals (187, 2.7), and is third in scoring with 650 points (9.3.). John Haar, who played at L. A. Baptist from 1980-82, is the top career scorer with 857 points (19.5 avg.). L. A. Baptist has reached the Southern Section 1-A basketball semifinals in 2 of the past 3 seasons and won 120 games in the last 6 years.

Scoring: Balanced scoring was a Bell-Jeff trademark all season, which is reflected in the Guards’ final statistics. Four players averaged more than 10 points a game. Forward Nick Sanderson averaged 17.7, center Henry Polee averaged 14.2 and guards Greg Dunn and Chris Dyer averaged 14.1 and 10.7, respectively.

Pitching: In 2 starts, Grant’s Javier Delahoya has pitched struck out 24 batters in 14 innings. He pitched his second consecutive complete game, a 7-2 victory over Verdugo Hills in which he had 14 strikeouts, on Monday. . . . Kennedy left-hander Colin Hines had allowed 1 run in 14 innings of work entering Monday’s game with Granada Hills, and the Highlanders had yet to play an official game, so it seemed reasonable that Hines’ streak might continue. It didn’t. Hines allowed 3 runs in the first inning and 3 in the third as Granada Hills won easily, 8-2. Kennedy committed 2 errors behind Hines (2-1).

Batting: Kennedy junior Gino Tagliaferri continues his extra-base spree. Tagliaferri hit his third home run of the season on Monday, and the shortstop also has 3 triples, 2 doubles and 14 RBIs in only 6 games. Tagliaferri had 2 of Kennedy’s 4 hits off Granada Hills right-hander Jeff Adams in the Highlanders’ 8-2 win. “I have more respect for that guy than any hitter in the league,” said Adams, who gave up Tagliaferri’s 2-run homer to left on an 0-2 pitch in the sixth. Tagliaferri is 12 for 19 overall (.632). . . . Chaminade (4-2) has scored 50 runs since losing its first 2 games and is batting .324 (62 for 189) as a team. The Eagles have 7 players hitting over .300 and 7 players with at least 5 RBIs.

Extra points: In Taft’s 10-6 victory over Reseda on Monday, Jason Shapiro was 2 for 2, scored 3 runs, stole 3 bases and drove in 5 runs. His grand slam in the fifth gave the Toreadores the West Valley League win. . . . Royal is off to a 6-0 start and Jason Jones is leading the way. Jones leads the team with 8 hits and 7 stolen bases. Sophomore Bill Egan is 6 for 11 while platooning at first base. Pitcher Brian Skow already has 3 saves. Starters John Ward and Sean Sullivan are both 2-0. Ward has given up 2 earned runs in 14 innings and Sullivan has allowed 1 in 10 innings.
