High School Baseball : Delahoya Home Runs Pace Grant

Grant’s Javier Delahoya broke a 4-4 tie with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Grant a 7-4 victory over Fairfax in an East Valley League game at Grant (2-3).

For Delahoya, it was his second home run of the game. He also had a 3-run shot in the fifth and finished the day 3 for 4.

Delahoya’s seventh-innning blast drove in Jim Mattman and John Kukawski, who had reached base on consecutive hits. Mattman was 2 for 3, and Kukawski was 2 for 2. Glen Rothstein (1-0), who pitched the last inning in relief, picked up the win.

Sylmar 12, North Hollywood 0--The Spartans collected 13 hits in an East Valley League game at North Hollywood that was called after 5 innings because the Huskies ran out of players.

North Hollywood (3-2) started the game with 11 players, but the Huskies made two substitutions by the fifth inning, and their catcher was then ejected, forcing a forfeit.

Right-hander Nino Romo (2-0) had his second consecutive impressive outing for Sylmar (4-1). The 5-10 junior allowed 3 hits while striking out 2 and has become a solid No. 2 starter behind All-City pitcher Olonzo Woodfin.

“We feel really confident sending him out there,” Sylmar Coach John Klitsner said. “We’re not in a position where we’re scared to play without Lonnie pitching.”

Chatsworth 14, Taft 5--The Chancellors scored 7 runs in the first and had 13 runs by the third in their West Valley League victory over Taft at Chatsworth.

David Waco and John Haselbusch had 2-run singles for Chatsworth (6-1, 2-0 in leauge play) in the first. Rex McMackin finished with 3 runs batted in and Art Lowe, Waco and Joel Wolfe each had 2 hits.

Reseda 4, Cleveland 3--Senior right-hander Steve Brody struck out 10 batters while allowing just 3 walks and 1 earned run in a complete-game West Valley League victory at Reseda.

Rod Stricklin, who went 2 for 3, drove in Eric Perry with Reseda’s winning run in the fourth on a ground out.

Monroe 8, Van Nuys 3--Adam Clark’s 3-run homer in the third lifted the Vikings (4-3) to a Mid-Valley League win at Van Nuys. Clark was 2 for 3 in support of right-hander Ron Robart’s complete-game, 6-strikeout performance. Brian Eldridge had 2 hits for Monroe.

St. Genevieve 16, Agoura 6--St. Genevieve pounded out 13 hits including 2 home runs in a nonleague victory at Agoura.

“They just pounded the ball,” Agoura Coach John Crow said. “We had kids diving for cover, they were hitting the ball so hard.”

Roland De La Maza hit his fourth home run of the season for St. Genevieve (4-1). Danny Enriquez also homered for the Valiants.

Newbury Park 14, Dos Pueblos 7--Geoff Black was 3 for 5 with a grand slam and 7 RBIs to lead the Panthers to a nonleague victory over Dos Pueblos at Newbury Park. Bryan Pearson added a solo home run and scored 4 runs for Newbury Park (5-3).

Culver City 10, Thousand Oaks 3--Dave DeSoto was 2 for 2, including a 3-run home run in the fourth as Thousand Oaks lost a nonleague game at Thousand Oaks.

Grace Community 5, Highland Hall 1--Aaron Rudelson had 12 strikeouts and gave up just 2 hits for Highland Hall but was victimized by 8 errors in the Serra tournament consolation game.

Coutin 7, Newbridge 6--Gary Matthews, Jr., the son of former major leaguer Gary Matthews, stole home for the winning run with 2 outs in the seventh to lead the Knights in a nonleague game at Lanark Park.

Oak Park 2, L.A. Baptist 2--Oak Park’s Todd Creason struck out with runners at second and third and two out in the eighth inning before the nonleague game at Oak Park was called because of darkness.

Mark Karr drove in both runs for the Eagles (2-1-1) with a single in the fourth.

Providence 7, Pater Noster 1--Mark Miyamoto singled twice and drove in 2 runs to lead the Pioneers to a Serra tournament win at Pater Noster. Victor Salazar pitched a complete-game victory to improve his record to 1-1. He also had 11 strikeouts.
