High School Spring Sports : Chaminade Stuffs Alemany in 5 Games

Chaminade middle blocker Chris Bruckner had 28 kills and 7 blocks, including a match-winning stuff, to lead the Eagles to a 15-2, 13-15, 15-7, 15-17, 15-12 victory over Alemany in a nonleague volleyball match Wednesday at Alemany.

Chaminade scored the final 3 points of the match to break a 12-12 tie. A block by Bruckner on match-point sealed the victory.

Bill Cheeseman added 21 kills and sophomore Mark Miles had 35 assists for Chaminade.

In other volleyball matches:

Harvard d. Glendale, 15-13, 12-15, 8-15, 15-11, 15-8--Harvard rallied to upset the third-ranked team in the Southern Section 3-A Division in a nonleague match at Glendale.

Harvard (2-1), the 10th-ranked team in the 3-A, handed Glendale (3-1) its first loss of the season.

Leading the way for Harvard was senior outside hitter Bob Hillman, who had 27 kills. Junior outside hitter Geoff Given added 14 kills.

Taft d. Granada Hills, 15-10, 15-3, 15-6--Scott Melman had 15 kills and Dave Sarnow added 11 to lead the Toreadors to a West Valley League victory over Granada Hills at Taft.

Melman had 52 assists for Taft (2-0, 1-0 in league play), which had a surprisingly easy time with the Highlanders (0-2 in league play). Granada Hills won the City Section 3-A title last year and took Chatsworth, the defending league champions, to five games before losing Monday.

“A lot of kids were inspired,” Taft Coach Doug Magorien said. “They really feel we have a chance to beat Chatsworth.”

Chatsworth d. Cleveland, 15-3, 15-3, 15-7--Lance Smith had 6 kills and John Ross added 5 to lead the Chancellors in a West Valley League match at Cleveland. Jamie Chen had 18 assists for Chatsworth (4-0, 2-0).

North Hollywood d. Sylmar, 4-15, 15-10, 7-15, 15-13, 15-3--Chris Strong and Trung Nguyen each had 10 kills as the Huskies won a Mid-Valley League game at North Hollywood.

SOFTBALL

Bell-Jeff 5, Arcadia 1--Stacey Smock pitched a no-hitter, striking out 13 and walking 1, in a nonleague victory at Bell-Jeff.

Smock, a senior right-hander, has 31 strikeouts in her past 2 outings. Bell-Jeff is 2-3.

TENNIS

Chatsworth 7, Poly 0--Justin Sherring and Rhaeer Datt cruised to 6-0, 6-1 singles victories as the Chancellors won a nonleague match at Chatsworth. Mike Slavett scored 6-2, 6-3 wins for Chatsworth, which improved its record to 3-0. Poly is 1-2.
