Rolling Hills 9 Gets Jump but Wilts to North Torrance Attack

Everything seemed to be going well for Rolling Hills’ baseball team at the start of Thursday’s Bay League opener against North Torrance.

The Titans jumped to a 3-0 lead and had other scoring opportunities in the first three innings. But North rallied in the middle innings to score a 10-4 victory at Rolling Hills.

“We had a chance early when we had them on the ropes,” said Titans Coach Garry Poe. “But we didn’t capitalize.”

Rolling Hills (1-6) knocked out starter Greg Davis with two runs in the first inning but Leo Cheatham came in and shut down the Titans. Davis, the Bay League co-most valuable player last year, gave up two runs on no hits and four walks.

North (4-2) was dealt a blow when shortstop Anthony Anetema suffered a dislocated left elbow covering second on a stolen base in the first inning. North Coach Mike Neily said the injury shook up his team.

“When you lose one of the best athletes on your team like that, you kind of get unsettled,” he said.

North scored two in the third and two in the fifth, then put the game away with six in the seventh. The Saxons’ Jim Henderson was 2 for 3 with two RBI, while Brian Wixom drove in two with a seventh-inning bases-loaded double.

Dave Breneman, Bob Mitchell, Steve Archibald and Craig Plumley had RBI for Rolling Hills.
