College Roundup : Cutliff Leads Chapman Past Dominguez Hills, 7-4

Cris Cutliff went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs, including a 2-run home run in the first inning, to lead Chapman College to a 7-4 baseball victory Saturday over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the defending California Collegiate Athletic Assn. champion, at Carson.

It was the Panthers’ second victory in two days over Dominguez Hills (9-12 overall, 0-5 in conference). Chapman (15-11-1, 4-2) has won seven of its last nine games.

Cutliff, who extended his hitting streak to six games, has hit safely in 16 of the last 17 games. Dave Bird (5-2) pitched six innings for the victory, and Steve Halweg allowed just one hit and struck out three in three innings to pick up the save.

Cal State Fullerton 15, Pacific 8--Cal State Fullerton, which is 20-8 and 2-0 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn., scored seven runs in the 12th inning at Billy Hebert Field in Stockton. Jason Rolish led off the 12th with a single and went to second on a passed ball, and Greg Mannion singled him home for the go-ahead run. Later in the inning, Ralph Ramirez hit a grand slam with one out. Winning pitcher Erik Silvey (1-0) pitched the final 3 innings, allowing no runs on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts.

In CCAA softball:

Cal State Bakersfield 10-8, Chapman 3-4 (second game 12 innings)--Anna Martin’s grand slam in the third inning helped Cal State Bakersfield take the first game of a doubleheader at Hart Park, and the Roadrunners scored five times in the 12th to win the second game.

Stella Gutierrez picked up the opening-game victory and Margaret Harvey won the second game for Bakersfield (16-4 overall, 6-2 in conference). Jackie Blake (8-4) and Shelly Mahon (6-5) took the losses for Chapman (21-12, 5-3).

Terry Reifel was 3 for 4 in the first game for Bakersfield, which had 13 hits. Michelle Lyons and Leslie Burke were both 2 for 3 for Chapman, which had 8 hits.

In the second game, Blake’s pinch-hit single in the sixth tied the score at 2-2. Both teams scored runs in the 10th inning, but Bakersfield outscored Chapman in the 12th, 5-1. Sally Meyer was 3 for 6 for Chapman, and Laura Grant was 3 for 6 for Bakersfield.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 5-8, Westmont 2-6--Joe Holden went 2 for 3 in the first game and 4 for 5 with 5 RBIs in the second game for the Vanguards in a doubleheader sweep at Santa Barbara.

In the first game, Erik Gasner hit two solo home runs for SCC (9-14-1 overall, 6-2 in conference), which took over first place in the conference. Larry Jacinto (3-3) pitched a four-hitter for the victory.

In the second game, Holden’s bases-loaded double in the seventh provided the winning margin. Mark Deushane (5-2) picked up the victory in relief.
