Girls’ Roundup : Burlingame Runs Off With Division III Championship

Burlingame High School, taking advantage of a 21-4 run in the second quarter, defeated Lemoore, 61-39, to win the State Division III girls’ championship Saturday at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

Forward Barb Beainy scored a game-high 29 points for Burlingame (35-2) of the Central Coast Section. Forward Rachel Rossiter had 14 points to lead Lemoore (22-9), the Central Section champion and Southern California representative that shot 25% from the field.

Willows 82, Chowchilla 58--It was a matchup of Chowchilla’s height against Willows’ speed--and speed won out.

The defending state champion Honkers (25-4) beat the Redskins (25-3) to win the Division IV girls’ championship at the College of the Canyons in Valencia. In the process, Willows set a record for the most points scored in a state championship game with 82. The prior record of 77 points was set by Riverside Poly in 1977.

Willows took an early lead and put the game away with three minutes left in the half, outscoring the Redskins, 10-2, to take a 51-31 halftime lead.

Willows, Westside League champion, is from the Northern Section. Chowchilla, which won the North Sequoia League title, represents the Central Section.

Ripon Christian 53, Avenal 36--Ripon Christian broke out of an 8-8 tie late in the first quarter with a 10-1 run to wrap up the Division V girls’ championship at College of the Canyons.

Ripon forward Donna Terpsma scored 25 points, including 15 in the first half and four consecutive baskets late in the third quarter, to put the Knights ahead by 16 points. Avenal never recovered.

Ripon Christian (29-1) won the Trans Valley League title before winning the Division V Northern Regional. Avenal (27-4) won the West Sierra League title prior to winning the Central Section title.
