1988 ALL--COUNTY BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM : For These Starters, There’s Nothing That Succeeds as Well as Experience

Seven players who started at least three years on varsity teams head the list of selections for the 14th Times’ All-Orange County boys’ basketball team.

The 10-man squad, selected from ballots submitted by the 57 coaches in the county, has loads of experience. Three players--Steve Guild of Marina, Adam Keefe of Woodbridge and Kevin Rembert of Mater Dei--were members of their varsity teams since their freshman seasons.

Keefe, a 6-foot 9-inch center who has signed with Stanford, joins Bobby Joyce of Santa Ana as repeat selections from last season.

Joyce is among four players who have been varsity starters since their sophomore seasons. Gylan Dottin of Saddleback, Joe Small of Bolsa Grande and Chris Tower of Westminster were also three-year starters.

The team, to which players were chosen regardless of position, also features Mike Goff of Magnolia, the county’s leading scorer and rebounder; Servite guard par excellence Brian Kenney, and Tustin’s smooth Leo Parker.

Keefe and Rembert were largely responsible for leading their respective teams to 20-plus victory seasons and into the Southern California regional playoffs.

Keefe almost single-handedly sparked Woodbridge to 23 victories. “He is, without question, the best player in Orange County,” said Bill Shannon, Woodbridge coach.

Rembert improved steadily along with his Mater Dei teammates, who early on looked as though they would fall far short of previous Monarch teams. His scoring average was just fewer than 10 points a game in nonleague play. By the end of the season, as Mater Dei was recording 21 victories, Rembert’s average had jumped to 15, the improvement coming in tough Angelus League and playoff competition.

Each member of the all-county team is a senior, marking the first time since the all-county team’s inception that an underclassman was not chosen.

The 10 players will be honored by The Times at a brunch on May 1 at the Anaheim Hilton. They will receive certificates and a gold plaque for their achievements. The player and coach of the year will also be announced at the ceremonies.
