High School Spring Sports : Canoga Park Hands Reseda 1st Volleyball Loss

Led by Jeremy Mears, who had a match-high 23 kills, Canoga Park staged a four-point rally in the fifth game to defeat Reseda, 5-15, 5-15, 15-9, 15-8, 16-14, in a Mid-Valley League volleyball match Wednesday at Reseda.

It was the first loss for defending-league champion Reseda (3-1, 2-1 in league play). After losing the first two games, Canoga Park (5-0, 4-0) rallied to tie the match and force a fifth and deciding game. The Hunters trailed, 14-12, in the fifth game before Bert Darakorn, a senior setter, served four unanswered points.

“The kids thought they could do it the whole time,” Canoga Park Coach Bill Chapman said.

Canoga Park’s Sean Reyes had 10 kills and four blocked shots and Shawn Addison had seven kills and two blocks.

Coley Kyman and Mike Marzahl each had 20 kills for Reseda.

“We were dead,” Reseda Coach Bob Berrenson said.

In other volleyball matches:

Harvard d. St. Genevieve, 15-3, 15-5, 15-7--Senior Bill Glass had 11 kills and freshman Mark Shoptaw added nine kills for Harvard in its Santa Fe League opener at Harvard.

Chatsworth d. Kennedy, 10-15, 15-4, 15-3, 15-8--Jamie Chen had 34 assists and Sheldon Satoznik 25 to lead the Chancellors in a West Valley League match at Chatsworth.

Jim Goldstein mixed in some fine passing for Chatsworth (7-1, 4-0). Kennedy is 2-1 in league play.

Granada Hills d. Cleveland, 15-7, 15-2, 14-16, 13-15, 15-0--Scott Nakada had 20 kills and 31 assists to lead the host Highlanders to their first West Valley League win in three matches. Ben Itkin added 18 kills for Granada Hills (3-2) and Han Seung had 36 assists. Cleveland is 0-3 in league play.

Sylmar d. Van Nuys, 15-10, 15-4, 16-14--Chris Laune had 12 kills and four service aces to lead the Spartans in a Mid-Valley League match at Van Nuys.

Chaminade d. Bell-Jeff, 15-4, 15-3, 15-10--Chris Bruckner had nine kills and Aaron Winters added eight to lead the Eagles to a Santa Fe League win at Chaminade. Kevin Kravets had 28 assists for Chaminade (5-2) in its league opener.

Montclair Prep d. Oakwood, 15-5, 15-6, 15-8--The Mounties evened their record at 1-1 in the Liberty League behind Mike Pobanz’s 25 assists.

BOYS’ GOLF

Thousand Oaks d. Royal, 391-421--Chad Holden shot a 1-over-par 72 for Thousand Oaks in a nonleague match at the Sunset Hills Country Club.

Jeff Holden shot a 77, Kelly Schlender had a 78 and Mike Donnelly shot 79 for the Lancers (14-1).

Scott Cockerill was low medalist for Royal with an 80.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Chatsworth d. Birmingham, 4-3--Rajeev Datt defeated Gary Rosenfield, 6-1, 6-7, 7-6, in a tiebreaker in the No. 2 singles match to give Chatsworth (4-0) the nonleague win. Chatsworth lost all three doubles matches but swept the singles.

Burbank d. Glendale, 11-7--Mark Nielsen, Burbank’s No. 1 singles player, won three sets and No. 3 John Chun won two for host Burbank in the nonleague match.

Nielsen defeated both Martin Escos and Brian Kassabian, 6-4, and beat Duong Cao, 6-2. Burbank’s Tom MacDonald won one set.

The No. 1 doubles team of Ron Allen and Al Lewis won all three of its sets. Burbank improved to 7-0.

SOFTBALL

Chaminade 13, Immaculate Heart 0--The Eagles’ Zetiee Honore remained undefeated as she pitched her third one-hitter in a nonleague victory at Chaminade.

Honore (4-0), a senior right-hander, struck out 10 batters and allowed a fourth-inning single to Lydia Gonzales. Honore also was 2 for 3 with two runs batted in.

Losing pitcher Nikki Smith allowed nine walks, eight in the second inning when the Eagles scored 10 runs.
