Community College Roundup : Golden West Eliminated in Softball Play

Golden West College lost to Mesa, 4-0, Saturday in the third round of the losers’ bracket in the Golden West softball tournament.
It was the Rustlers’ second defeat of the day and eliminated them from the competition.
Mesa managed only three hits but capitalized on three Golden West errors. Mesa scored twice in the second inning on one hit and two errors, and scored two more runs in the third on a hit and a walk.
Earlier Saturday, Golden West lost, 3-0, to Central Arizona, the nation’s No. 1 community college team. Nycki Sandstedt pitched a three-hitter against the Rustlers.
In its first game Saturday, Golden West had 10 hits--five for extra bases--to defeat Glendale College of Arizona, 4-2. Lori Peterson, Lorna Payne and Jessica Duran each had two hits for the Rustlers (10-9). Duran (6-5) also picked up the victory with a career-high 13 strikeouts.
Ealier Saturday, San Joaquin Delta defeated Orange Coast, 5-2.
In nonconference men’s tennis:
Rancho Santiago 9, College of the Desert 0--Thien Dao defeated Jeff Riddick, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 1 singles to lead Rancho Santiago (4-8) over College of the Desert (5-5) at Palm Desert.
Saddleback 5, Alvin (Texas) 4--Ed Peregrino defeated Hakan Olsson, 7-5, 6-4, and Craig O’Shannessy beat Andreus Dahlstrom, 6-3, 6-1, to lead the host Gauchos (14-1, No. 3 in California) over Alvin, the nation’s No. 6 team.
