Prep Baseball : La Quinta, Western Reach Lions Final

La Quinta High School defeated Cerritos, 8-4, Tuesday night in Glover Stadium to gain a berth in the championship game of the Anaheim Lions baseball tournament.

La Quinta will play Western, a 10-6 winner over Kennedy in Tuesday’s other semifinal game, for the championship tonight at 7 p.m. in Glover Stadium.

La Quinta is 10-4 and ranked No. 10 in the Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn. poll. Western is 8-4-1.

Cerritos and Kennedy will play for third place today at 1 p.m. in Glover Stadium.

In other Anaheim tournament games:

Sonora 11, Troy 6--Brent Smith hit two home runs and David Strieter one for Sonora (5-7) at Glover Stadium. Smith, who had not hit a homer this season before Tuesday, was 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs.

Andy Beisel, a sophomore making his first varsity start, pitched 5 innings for the victory. Rob Russell hit his third home run of the season for Troy.

University 2, Woodbridge 1--Trent McGinn singled home two runs in the bottom of the sixth for University (3-10) at Brookhurst Park.

Kevin Squires (2-2) threw a six-hitter for the victory, and Kevin Burke took the loss. Fred Schweer singled home a run for Woodbridge (3-9) in the second inning.

Westminster 10, Rim of the World 1--Ryan Klesko (3-1) had 14 strikeouts in going the distance for Westminster (8-5) at Brookhurst Park.

The Lions were paced by David Rodriguez, who went 3 for 4, scored 4 runs and stole a base, and Brett Grebe, who was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple. Grebe also knocked in a run, scored two runs himself and had a stolen base.

In the Bolsa Grande tournament:

La Mirada 11, Capistrano Valley 0--Bill Bardens’ three hits were about the only highlight for Capistrano Valley (5-7) in the semifinal game.

La Mirada will play Artesia in the final today at 1:30 at Bolsa Grande High School.

Artesia 12, Orange Lutheran 10--Orange Lutheran opened a 10-4 lead in the fifth inning but Artesia scored 8 runs in the fifth inning on 5 hits to pull out the win. Rich Gress had a triple and two RBIs.

Tim McCann and Todd Dudley had run-scoring doubles and Ken Hughie hit a solo home run for Orange Lutheran in the second inning. Matt Wilson added a two-run home run for Orange Lutheran in the third inning.

Leuzinger 7, Newport Harbor 4--Brian Franklin struck out four and gave up five hits for Leuzinger. Tyrone Scott got Leuzinger off to a fast start with a two-run homer in the first inning.

Brad Zenz and Kirk Summers had solo homers for Newport Harbor (3-9). Zenz was 3 for 4. Newport Harbor plays Costa Mesa today at 10:30.

Estancia 9, Costa Mesa 3--Conrad Colby was 2 for 3 with a home run and 4 RBIs; Dan Dougherty had 2 hits and scored 3 runs, and Mike Lewis had a double and 2 RBIs for Estancia (8-4). Tony Mendoza (3-0) pitched a five-hitter.

Costa Mesa is 6-6.

Rancho Alamitos 10, Bolsa Grande 5--Kevin Schrabel had two doubles and two RBIs, Bill Hillstelad had two hits and an RBI and Kevin Webster had three hits and two RBIs for Rancho Alamitos (5-6).

Ghassan Herische, Eric Schreifels and John Ramirez had two hits each for Bolsa Grande (3-8).

Glenn 14, Santiago 5--Tony Alfaro had three hits and Sean McCorry hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning for Santiago (3-9). Santiago plays Dominguez at 1:30 today at Los Amigos High School.

In the North Santa Barbara County tournament:

Menlo 6, Capistrano Valley Christian 2--Capistrano Valley Christian pitchers walked eight hitters, five of whom later scored, in the semifinal-round game.
