Troubled former NFL quarterback Art Schlichter, forced two days ago to file for protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, signed with the Ottawa Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.
Schlichter, 27, was signed to a one-year contract for the 1988 season with an option for 1989, a team official said. The contract is said to be worth $100,000.
Schlichter, who was suspended for 13 months by the NFL in 1983 for gambling, Tuesday filed for protection under Chapter 7 of federal bankruptcy laws in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Columbus, Ohio, showing nearly $1 million in debts and $1,800 in assets. Schlichter, who last played for the Indianapolis Colts in 1985, was arrested in 1987 and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor criminal charge of sports gambling in Indianapolis.
