Sophomore Pitcher Gibbs Leads Bonita Vista to Tournament Victory in Las Vegas

Sophomore Doug Gibbs of Bonita Vista High School had not pitched more than three innings previously in a varsity game, but he went the distance Friday to lead the Barons to a 7-4 victory over Las Vegas Bonanza in the Cowboy Classic high school baseball tournament at Las Vegas.

Teddy Ehrhardt was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, and David Pappan was 1 for 3 with 2 runs batted in. Randy Abshier was 2 for 2 with a double and 2 RBIs for Bonita Vista (9-4).

Gibbs allowed just four hits as Bonita Vista committed five errors.

In other Cowboy Classic games:

Basic (Nev.) 11, Mt. Carmel 4--Basic scored five runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead and coasted to the victory. Chris Beeman and Mark Van Aelstyn doubled for Mt. Carmel, which had just five hits.

BASKETBALL

Athletes in Action will sponsor its third annual three-on-three basketball tournament at Municipal Gymnasium in Balboa Park April 23.

The double-elimination tournament begins at 9 a.m. with registration for the girls’ varsity and junior varsity at 9 a.m., boys’ varsity and junior varsity at 11 a.m. and college and post-college players at 2 p.m.

There also will be a slam-dunk contest and a free-throw shoot-off. All teams are guaranteed two games, and the cost is $5 per player or $15 per team. For more information or application forms, call 451-0107.

RUNNING

Entries are being accepted for the La Jolla Half Marathon and 2 Mile Fun Run/Walk April 17.

More than 3,000 runners competed in last year’s event, and this year’s field will be limited to 4,000 runners.

The course begins at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, winds through the city of Del Mar and follows the coast south up Torrey Pines hill, along La Jolla Shores Drive, and finishes at La Jolla Cove.

Entry fees are $21 for the half marathon and $18 for the 2-mile run/walk. There is no registration on the day of the race. For more information, call 272-8316.
