Baseball : Laguna Beach Wins 19-Inning Marathon With Bases-Loaded Walk

Laguna Beach High School drew a walk, which forced in a run after 6 hours and 19 innings of play, and the Artists defeated Woodbridge, 6-5, in a Pacific Coast League baseball game at Woodbridge.

The game tied for fourth-longest game in Southern Section history. The longest game was 23 innings in 1926. In that one, Pomona College defeated Fullerton, also by a 6-5 score.

Tuesday’s game, which started at 3:15 p.m. and ended at 9:15 p.m., was the longest in time and innings in the histories of both schools.

Neil Collins was walked to open the 19th inning, and after the next two hitters made outs, David Crain singled and Danny Lane was walked intentionally. Pete Schmitt was walked to force home Collins with the go-ahead run. Doug Pryor, the third Woodbridge pitcher, took the loss.

Collins pitched the first 10 innings for Laguna Beach, Lane the next 7 and Clark Carmen the final 2 for the victory.

Jimmy Burke started for Woodbridge (4-9, 1-3) and worked the first nine innings. Eric Brougher worked the next seven before being replaced by Pryor, who pitched the final two.

Lane was 5 for 9 including 3 doubles, a triple and a home run for Laguna Beach (4-7, 2-2). Burke was 5 for 7 with 3 RBIs, and Stan Machesky was 4 for 9 and scored 3 runs for Woodbridge.

Laguna Beach scored two runs in the seventh inning to tie it, 3-3. The teams scored single runs in the 8th and 15th innings.

In another Pacific Coast League baseball game:

Laguna Hills 6, Orange 2--Mike Smedes (2-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight to lead host Laguna Hills (5-8, 2-2).

Smedes helped his own cause by hitting a two-run home run in the first inning.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 9, Capistrano Valley Christian 3--Tim McCann hit a home run in the first inning and John Malmquist hit a two-run double in the fifth to lead the Lancers (13-4, 3-0) at Oso Park in Mission Viejo.

Ward Lookabaugh (7-0) gave up four hits and struck out six in five innings for the victory. The Eagles are 5-7 and 0-3.

In the Academy League:

Newport Christian 11, Heritage Christian 9 (eight innings)--Newport Christian (5-2, 2-1) scored two runs in the top of the eighth for the victory at Bellis Park in Buena Park.

Joe Meisinger singled home two with the bases loaded and two out to put Newport Christian ahead in the eighth.
