Loyola Tries to Shake Fresno Baseball Losses in 4-Game Series With San Diego

The Loyola Marymount baseball team resumes West Coast Athletic Conference play today with a four-game series at the University of San Diego.

The Lions, 31-9 and ranked fourth and fifth in national ratings, lost two games at No. 3 Fresno State this week to snap their 12-game winning streak. The Lions and Toreros will play at 2:30 p.m. today, a noon double-header Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Lions are 4-0 in WCAC play. San Diego, a good offensive team, is 2-6 in the WCAC and 17-18 overall.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team, in danger of falling further into last place, will play a three-game series with Cal Poly Pomona starting today with a 2:30 p.m. game at home. The Toros play a noon double-header Saturday at Pomona. The Toros are 3-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. and in last place, 2 1/2 games behind Cal State Northridge. Dominguez Hills is 12-20 overall. Bruce Vegely (2-4) is scheduled to start today for the Toros, followed by David Haggard (1-1) and probably Ron Bunse (2-4) Saturday.

Lakers Byron Scott and A. C. Green are scheduled to be among basketball players on hand at 3 p.m. Sunday for the Celebrity All-Star Classic basketball game fund-raiser for First African Methodist Episcopal Church. The game will be played at El Camino College. Scott, Green and other stars and former players will be referees and coaches for the game, which will feature two church teams.

The annual Loyola Marymount basketball team banquet will be held Thursday at the Airport Marriott on Century Boulevard in Westchester. The team will be feted for the finest season in Loyola history: a 28-4 record, league title and NCAA Tournament appearance, 25-game winning streak and nation-leading 110.3 scoring average. Tickets cost $35. The banquet will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. Reservations are available through the Loyola basketball office, 642-4530.
