High School Spring Sports : Alves’ 2nd No-Hitter Helps Burroughs Roll

Christy Alves of Burroughs had struck out seven consecutive San Gabriel batters Thursday and had not allowed a hit when she allowed her first walk in the fourth inning.

Alves’ one-out free pass to Desiree Martinez was the only batter she allowed to reach base in pitching her second no-hitter of the season for Burroughs in its 3-0 Foothill League softball victory at home.

After walking Martinez, Alves (11-1) struck out the next five batters and finished with 15 strikeouts.

Burroughs scored its runs in the fifth. Dana Smock singled, stole second and scored on Shelly Pape’s single. The second and third runs came as a result of two Matador errors.

The Indians had four singles in improving to 14-2, 2-0 in league play. San Gabriel dropped to 9-5, 0-2.

In other softball games:

North Hollywood 9, Van Nuys 8--Maia Sharp tripled home Michelle Cabaldon to score the winning run in the eighth inning of an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

With North Hollywood leading, 8-3, Van Nuys staged a four-run rally in the sixth and added a run in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Leticia Carranza hit two triples for North Hollywood. Jennifer Rothstein (6-0) struck out seven and allowed seven hits.

Birmingham 31, Cleveland 4--Birmingham’s Erica Anenberg doubled, tripled and knocked in two runs, and Betsy Lund hit a grand slam in the sixth inning of the West Valley League game at Cleveland. Birmingham added 19 runs in the seventh.

Thousand Oaks 8, Westlake 0--The Lancers scored six runs in the second inning on six hits to blow open the Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Phronsie Franco had a two-run double and Jamie Heggen had a two-run single to spark the six-run inning.

Amy Chellevold contributed three hits for Thousand Oaks (10-6, 2-2).

Royal 5, Camarillo 1--Pitcher Danielle DeVan extended her streak of not allowing an earned run to seven consecutive games in the Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

The senior right-hander struck out seven and walked four in pitching a three-hitter.

Stevie Campbell homered on the first pitch of the game to ignite a three-run rally for Royal (13-4, 4-1).

Simi Valley 10, Channel Islands 0--Chrissy Oliver and Gina Skinner combined on a two-hitter, and Denise Swank had three hits for Simi Valley in a Marmonte League game at home. Oliver, Tammi Kaufman, Kelly Kaufman and Melissa Maples each added two hits for the Pioneers.

Taft 12, Canoga Park 7--Taft scored five runs on seven walks and a hit in the eighth to snap a 7-7 deadlock in the West Valley League game at Canoga Park.

Chatsworth 15, Granada Hills 1--Pitcher Christina Roopenian hit a run-scoring triple in the first as Chatsworth (6-1, 2-0) rallied for 10 runs on 10 walks and 2 hits in the North Valley League game at Granada Hills.

Poly 13, Grant 0--Poly pounded Grant with 16 hits, including nine in the sixth inning of the East Valley League game at Grant.

Hart 8, Alhambra 1--Sophomore right-hander Kym Weil tossed a three-hitter and struck out a season-high 16 batters to lead Hart to a Foothill League victory at Alhambra. Cindy Medearis, Roxanne Marta and Tammie Demchuk each had two hits for Hart (13-4-1, 2-0).

Antelope Valley 7, Saugus 2--Despite a four-hitter by junior Cathy Lewis, the Centurions (6-5, 2-3) had a four-game winning streak snapped in the Golden League game at Antelope Valley.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Kennedy 7, Canoga Park 0--The Golden Cougars earned their sixth consecutive victory with a nonleague sweep at Kennedy.

The Golden Cougars (6-0) were led by No. 1 singles player Donald Gutterman and the No. 1 doubles team of Josh Berger and Scott Shortridge. Gutterman, a senior who has not lost this season, won by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

Cleveland d. Grant, 5-2--Despite straight-set losses by No. 1 singles player Jason Rich and No. 3 Long Nguyen, Cleveland rallied in the nonleague match at home.

North Hollywood 4, Chatsworth 3-- North Hollywood’s Natt Narkthong defeated Chatsworth’s Justin Sherring, 7-5, 7-6, in the last match to give the Huskies a nonleague win at Chatsworth.

VOLLEYBALL

Taft d. El Camino Real, 15-3, 2-15, 15-9, 15-8--Scott Mehlman had 14 kills and Dave Saranow had nine to lead the Toreadors to a West Valley League win at El Camino Real.

Sylmar d. Grant, 14-16, 11-15, 15-9, 15-6, 15-11--Chris Laune had 18 kills to lead a Sylmar rally in the East Valley League match at Grant. Bruce Sakamoto added 10 kills and three service aces for Sylmar (4-3, 2-3).

Venice d. Canoga Park, 5-15, 12-15, 15-12, 15-13, 15-12--Despite 23 kills for Jeremy Mears and Sean Reyes’ 16, Canoga Park (6-1) suffered its first defeat in a nonleague match at Canoga Park.

Granada Hills d. Kennedy, 15-6, 14-16, 15-10, 15-11--Andy Farrow had 12 kills and Ben Itkin added 11 to lead the Highlanders (5-2, 3-2) in the West Valley League match at Kennedy.

GOLF

Westlake 387, Hart 435--Senior Chris Zambri shot a 2-under-par 70 to take medalist honors at Valencia Country Club as the Warriors won their 65th consecutive dual match.

TRACK

Burroughs 85, Alhambra 42--Mike Steward, Doug Dragomer and Bruce Luizzi all won their events to lead Burroughs to a Foothill League victory at home.

Royal 72, Newbury Park 64--Chad Sourbeer won three events for Royal in the Marmonte League meet at Royal. Sourbeer won the 100 meters in 11.1.
