THE PREPS : Smaller Schools Highlighted at Dana Hills Meet

About 980 athletes from 28 Southern Section schools will compete at the Dana Hills Invitational track and field meet, which will begin at 9 today at Dana Hills High School.

The meet, in its fourth year, mostly features schools in the Southern Section’s 1-A and Small Schools divisions. Several area 2-A schools also will compete.

Leading the teams are defending boys’ meet champion Elsinore, defending girls’ champion Western Christian, Brethren, Yucaipa, Marshall and Serrano.

Area schools competing include Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Hills, Capistrano Valley Christian and St. Margaret’s.

Distance standouts Tony Gibney and Steve Frisone of Laguna Hills and Carlsbad Army/Navy’s Jason Simpson, son of O.J. Simpson, are featured in the boys’ field. Serrano’s Tanya Thayer, the 1987 1-A 3,200-meter champion, tops the girls’ entrants.

The meet begins with the long jump at 9. Running events begin at 10, and the final events, the mile relays, are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
