Roy Smalley, who capped his 13-year major league career by playing for the World Series champion Minnesota Twins last year, announced his retirement at age 35. He had been released by the Chicago White Sox before the season.
Smalley, an infielder who also played with the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, had a lifetime batting average of .257 with 163 home runs and 694 runs batted in.
Smalley’s father, Roy Jr., was a major league infielder for 10 years. His uncle, Gene Mauch, managed in the majors for 26 years before retiring before this season.
