SDSU Hits Seven Home Runs in Sweep

San Diego State’s baseball team hit seven home runs en route to a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Air Force Monday at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Lance Pinnell and Jeff Barry hit home runs to lead the Aztecs to an 11-6 victory in the first game and SDSU (28-13-1, 10-2) hit five home runs to win the second game, 19-13.

Steve Montejano hit two home runs to lead the Aztecs’ second-game victory and Pinnell hit his second home run of the day. Jeff Champ had a solo home run and Billy Miller added a grand slam for the Aztecs, who swept the four-game series.

Air Force (16-18, 0-8) hit five home runs in the second game.

WOMEN’S GOLF

The U.S. International University women’s golf team trails the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, Tulsa, by only one stroke after the first round of the Lady Sundevil Invitational at the Anazasi Country Club in Phoenix.

Helen Alfredsson shot a two-under-par 70 and Allison Shapcott had a one-over 73 Monday to lead USIU, ranked 12th nationally. The Gulls’ one-day total is 299 strokes. Tulsa is at 298. Host Arizona State is third at 303. San Diego State is seventh at 306.

Alfredsson is two shots behind the individual leader, Kay Cornelius of Stanford, who shot a four-under-par 68 on the 6,188-yard course. Shapcott is in fifth place. Wendy Modic, at two-over 74, had San Diego State’s best individual score in the first round.

The three-round event continues today and finishes Wednesday in Phoenix.
