Newport Christian Forfeits Rest of Games

Newport Christian High School forfeited the remaining games of the 1988 baseball season, and suspended several members of the team, an Academy League source said Monday.

According to another league source, the forfeits may have resulted because several Newport Christian players were found drinking alcoholic beverages after a game against Avalon High on Catalina Island last week.

“I was just told they were going to forfeit tomorrow’s game. And that they anticipate forfeiting the rest of the season,” said Whitney baseball Coach Bill Crissman, whose team was to play Newport Christian in an Academy League game today.

“They said they suspended the players who were involved in an incident (last weekend).”

Crissman said the season was suspended because the team did not have enough players to continue, though “they said there’s a slight chance they still could get other players out (in time).”

Van Medina, Newport Christian principal, said, “We haven’t made any decisions yet. I can’t be any more explicit. We’re in the process of dealing with the situation.”
