Baseball : La Quinta Keeps On Winning, 2-1

Mark Dion singled up the middle to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh Wednesday as La Quinta High School defeated Garden Grove, 2-1, in a Garden Grove League baseball game.

La Quinta (14-4, 5-0), with its 11th consecutive victory, has the longest streak in Orange County. La Quinta loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice and two infield errors before Dion’s one-out single.

James Marquez (5-3) tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for his fifth straight victory. Mark Lung threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts but took the loss.

Rancho Alamitos 3, Bolsa Grande 2--Host Rancho Alamitos took advantage of three errors to score two unearned runs. Ryan Flanagan (5-0) threw a six-hitter for Rancho Alamitos (9-8, 3-2). Eric Scheifels (2-6) took the loss for Bolsa Grande (4-11, 1-4). Mike Willey had two hits and scored a run and Paul Lee had a sacrifice fly for Rancho Alamitos.

Kennedy 5, Pacifica 2--Host Kennedy (10-8, 4-2) snapped Pacifica’s 11-game winning streak. Peter Montera (3-2) pitched a four-hitter. Greg Hansell was 2 for 3 with a two-run home run in the third inning for Kennedy.

In the Angelus League:

Servite 18, St. Paul 1--Winning pitcher Chad Troxel struck out six for Servite (12-4, 5-1) at St. Paul. Tom Szymanski went 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs, Brian Criss went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a triple and Mike Robertson went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs for Servite.

Mater Dei 16, Bishop Montgomery 5--Joe Ciccarella hit a pair of home runs for host Mater Dei. Ciccarella, a senior who now has six home runs for the season, was 4 for 4 with a walk, scored 4 runs and drove in 4. Jim Austin was 2 for 3, including his fifth home run, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs for Mater Dei.

Mike Basse and Greg Shockey had 2 hits and 2 RBIs and Brian Keegan had 2 hits and 3 RBIs for Mater Dei (9-2, 4-2), which trailed, 2-0, after a half inning but led, 11-2, at the end of three innings. Tony Pena (5-1) gave up two runs in the first innings but pitched four shutout innings to get the victory.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 9, Cypress 2--Roger Weems (4-2) went six innings and struck out eight for host Esperanza (10-5, 4-2). Doug Saunders went 3 for 4, scored 2 runs and had an RBI and Jason Moler hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for Esperanza.

El Dorado 4, Loara 3--Chris Facione and Ed Keller hit back-to-back home runs and Pete Janicki struck out the side with the tying runs on second and third for El Dorado at Loara (7-7, 2-4).

Los Alamitos 7, Katella 0--Bob Callaway (5-2) pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks to lead Los Alamitos (14-3, 5-1). Greg Pirkl set a school season home-run record by hitting his sixth home run, a three-run shot in the first inning. Mike Kelly, who signed a letter of intent to go to Arizona State, went 3 for 3 for Los Alamitos.

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 13, Newport Harbor 3--Frank Herman went 3 for 5 with 2 home runs, 3 runs and 4 RBIs and Conrad Colby went 4 for 5 with a home run, 3 doubles and 5 RBIs to lead Estancia (11-5, 4-2). Tony Mendoza (5-0) got the win.

Saddleback 10, University 9--University (4-13, 0-6) scored two runs and had two runners on base in the top of the seventh with two outs, but Paul O’Hearn of Saddleback (12-4, 6-0) struck out Dave Dieter for his third save.

Tustin 3, Corona del Mar 2--Host Tustin broke a 2-2 tie with a run on four walks in the sixth inning. Scott Relph got the game-wining RBI when he walked on a 3-2 pitch. Monty Jones had a two-run single in the third inning.

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 14, Capistrano Valley 2--Randy Martin and Marlon Bringas hit home runs to lead Irvine (13-3, 6-0) at Capistrano Valley. David Guillen and Chris Wend hit home runs for Capistrano Valley. Anthony Hernandez and Jimmy Enochs each went 3 for 5 with one RBI, Martin went 3 for 4 and Junior Tery Rahmatulla went 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 28 games dating back to last season.

Dana Hills 9, San Clemente 7 (8 innings)--Craig Lombardi singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on a single by Lance Marks. Marks later scored on a single by Denny Papp. Dan Geaney hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for Dana Hills (9-8, 3-3). Darren Deffenbaugh pitched three innings to get the victory.
