Norman, Azinger Finish Well, Share Heritage Lead at 65
Greg Norman and Paul Azinger each mounted a fast finish and matched 65s to share the first-round lead Thursday in the $700,000 MCI Heritage golf tournament.
Sandy Lyle, however, found it difficult to follow up his Masters triumph and had to birdie the last two holes to break par.
“A bit of an effort,” Lyle said after his one-under-par 70 on the tough, tight Harbour Town Golf Links.
“I found motivating myself was harder than I thought,” said Lyle, a Scot who is seeking a rare third consecutive victory on the American PGA Tour.
Norman, whose final-round 64 came too late to put him in the title hunt at the Masters, has played his last two competitive rounds in 129, or 14 under par. Norman birdied seven holes, including the final two.
Azinger, a winner at Bay Hill last month and the 1987 player of the year, birdied the last three holes.
Clarence Rose was next at 66.
