Along with a victory, the Boston Red Sox got some satisfaction.

Mike Greenwell hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning Monday at Boston to give the Red Sox a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers and relief pitcher Mitch Williams, who has been accused of throwing at Boston hitters in the past.

“It felt good to beat Mitch Williams,” Greenwell said. “I knew I had a chance to win the game. I just wanted to get the ball in the air.”

Two years ago, Williams (0-1) hit Wade Boggs with a pitch. Last season, he hit Jim Rice and Greenwell. He brushed back Boggs twice in a game 10 days ago, touching off a bench-clearing altercation.

This time, Williams issued a leadoff walk to Boggs and a double to Rice before Greenwell hit his sacrifice fly on a 1-and-2 pitch.

Texas tied the score in the top of the ninth against Lee Smith (1-1) when Scott Fletcher walked, took third on Steve Kemp’s single and scored on a two-out passed ball by Boston catcher Rick Cerone.

Ellis Burks hit a leadoff home run to ignite Boston’s three-run first inning against Bobby Witt. Pete O’Brien of Texas hit solo homers in the second and the seventh off Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd.

Detroit 4, Kansas City 2--Alan Trammell and Larry Herndon hit consecutive run-scoring singles in the sixth inning at Detroit as the Tigers rallied to beat the Royals, breaking an eight-game losing streak against Floyd Bannister.

Frank Tanana (3-0) pitched a five-hitter over 7 innings, allowing both Kansas City runs in the third on Kevin Seitzer’s two-run single. After Tanana issued a two-out walk in the eighth, Mike Henneman came on and got his fifth save in seven Detroit victories.

Bannister (2-1) had not lost to Detroit since April 7, 1984 and is 12-7 lifetime against the Tigers.

New York Yankees 18, Minnesota 5--Rafael Santana, benched since last week because of a defensive mistake, rebounded from a 5-game absence with three hits and drove in two runs as the Yankees pounded out 20 hits while routing the Twins at Minneapolis.

Dave Winfield had three hits and four RBIs, and Jack Clark had three hits and three RBIs as every Yankee starter collected at least one hit and RBI.

Charles Hudson (1-0) pitched seven innings for the victory after starter Richard Dotson got off to a shaky start. Twins starter Bert Blyleven (1-1) took the loss after giving up five runs in three innings.

Chicago 4, Seattle 0--Dave LaPoint and Bill Long combined on a five-hitter, and Ivan Calderon and Carlton Fisk hit home runs at Seattle as the White Sox beat the Mariners for their fourth straight victory.

LaPoint (2-1) allowed four hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking one while lowering his earned-run average in three starts to 1.02.

Philadelphia 10, New York Mets 7--Chris James drove in three runs with a home run and a sacrifice fly as the Phillies broke a seven-game losing streak by outlasting the Mets at New York.
