Softball : Rain Halts Scoreless Tie in 20th : Fountain Valley’s Rice, Edison’s Carpenter in 0-0 Pitchers’ Duel

Edison and Fountain Valley high schools played 20 innings of a Sunset League softball game Tuesday and came away with a 0-0 tie.

The game was postponed because of rain and will be continued only if it’s needed to determine a playoff spot at the end of the league season.

Terry Carpenter (10-3) pitched all 20 innings for host Edison (12-4 overall, 2-0 in league play) with 27 strikeouts. She gave up just six hits. For Fountain Valley (14-4, 2-0), freshman Rae Rice pitched all 20 innings and had 22 strikeouts. Rice allowed one walk and seven hits.

Neither team could capitalize on the other’s errors as Edison committed six miscues and Fountain Valley five.

In other Sunset League action:

Ocean View 3, Huntington Beach 2--Jennifer Phillips went 2 for 2 to lead host Ocean View. Ocean View scored what proved to be the winning run on two hits and a throwing error. Ocean View is 10-8 and 1-1. Huntington Beach is 9-8 and 1-2.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 1, Bishop Amat 0--Mater Dei’s Kerry Callahan scored the only game’s only run on a throwing error in the second inning. Callahan reached base on an error. Sundy Mosqueda (4-1) pitched a three-hitter for visiting Mater Dei (12-4, 3-0).

In the Century League:

Canyon 10, Santa Ana Valley 0--Katie Cramer had six strikeouts and pitched a three-hitter for visiting Canyon (10-6, 2-1). Nikki Lewis had three hits and two RBIs and Tina French had two hits, was hit by a pitch and scored a run for Canyon.

Villa Park 3, Foothill 0--Munique Hernandez (5-4) pitched a three-hit shutout for her fifth consecutive victory for visiting Villa Park (9-11, 3-0). Ann Salzman hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 8, Bolsa Grande 0--Cheryl Longeway struck out nine and gave up just two hits to lead visiting Kennedy (14-5, 7-0). Longeway had a no-hitter entering the the seventh. Stefanie Hill paced Kennedy’s attack, going 2 for 2, scoring 2 runs, knocking in 1 and stealing a base.

In the Orange League:

Savanna 2, Magnolia 0--Nadine Ditto (2-1) pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven and walking none for visiting Savanna (10-8, 2-1). Rosie Ferrante tripled in the second inning and scored on Dawn Salter’s sacrifice. In the fourth, Lisa Hamilton tripled and scored on Carrie Fredrick’s sacrifice.

Valencia 11, Anaheim 0--Michele Granger lost a no-hitter with two out in the bottom of the seventh. She finished with a one-hitter and 15 strikeouts. Valencia is 14-4 and 1-1. Anaheim is 0-2 in league play. Rosena Garcia was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored for Valencia. Danette Davis went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

Western 2, Brea-Olinda 0--Dena Petersen (3-2) pitched a one-hitter and had back-to-back triples with Lisa Sciarrino to lead host Western (9-7, 3-0).

In the Sunrise League:

Rosary 21, St. Matthias 2--Host Rosary scored 20 runs in the first inning and breezed to the win. Colleen Callahan went 3 for 4 and scored 3 runs and Cindy Matthews was 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs to lead Rosary (10-6, 3-0). Rosary had 15 hits.
