Doug Maher, a former prep and college baseball star from El Toro, died Tuesday from injuries suffered in a car accident Sunday in Fort Collins, Colo.

Maher, 22, a senior outfielder and designated hitter for the University of Wyoming baseball team this spring, had been in critical condition at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins since Sunday night.

Maher, a 1983 graduate of El Toro High School, played at Rancho Santiago College in 1984 and 1985.

“We are still all in shock about it,” Rancho Santiago Coach Don Sneddon said. “We just found out about it and it’s hard to believe. He was just a great kid. It’s a real loss.”

Dan Edwards, a teammate of Maher’s who was also in the car, was in stable condition Tuesday at Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie.

The Cowboys canceled Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Colorado School of Mines. Wyoming Coach Bill Kinneberg said the Cowboys will play Wednesday’s doubleheader against Kearney State in Maher’s memory.
