High School Spring Sports : Jenkins Heaves Saugus to Victory

Share

Saugus track Coach Bill Van Duzee has been waiting all season for discus-thrower Damiean Jenkins to cut loose.

“He’s been consistently throwing 175 feet in practice,” Van Duzee said. “But he hasn’t been able to do it in the meets.”

Until Tuesday.

Jenkins, who had a previous best of 169 feet, 10 inches, unleashed a throw of 173-5 to lead the Centurions to an 84-52 victory over Quartz Hill in a Golden League meet at College of the Canyons. The 6-2 1/2, 225-pound senior also had two other throws over 171 feet.

“He put it all together today,” Van Duzee said of Jenkins, who placed eighth in last year’s Southern Section 4-A Division championships. “He did what we knew he was capable of all along.”

Jenkins wasn’t the only Centurion to excel in the weight events. John Characky, who has a personal best of 53-1 1/2 in the shotput, approached that mark with a 52-11 effort.

Double winners for Saugus (3-2, 3-1 in league meets) were Christian Stanley in the 100 (11.7) and 200 meters (23.9) and Tom Greenwood in the 800 (2:06.3) and 3,200 (10:24.1).

Joe Devine, better known for the 800 and 1,600 meters, won the 400 in 53.3 and Scott Cutchall won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.8.

In other boys’ meets:

Burroughs 75, Burbank 52--Led by Bruce Luizzi’s victories in the 100 and 200 meters, Burroughs dominated the sprint events to win the Foothill League meet at Burbank.

Luizzi won the 100 in 11.1, the 200 in 22.8 and led off the victorious 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams. Teammate Otto Varela won the 400 in 53.2 and ran legs on the winning relays.
