THE PREPS : Baseball : Canyon Stakes Claim to First Place

Right fielder John Thivert drove in four runs and made a crucial defensive play as Canyon High School moved into sole possession of first place with a 10-3 victory over Foothill Friday in a Century League baseball game at Canyon.

Thivert had three hits, including a triple. He also preserved a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth by throwing out the potential tying run at the plate with two outs.

In the bottom of the sixth, Canyon (14-5, 7-2) scored six runs. Thivert and John Cummings each had two runs batted in during the inning.

Scott Myers (5-1) pitched 5 innings for the victory, with Marty Little getting the save.

Paul Thornton had two hits for Foothill (11-8, 6-3).

In other Century League games:

Villa Park 8, Santa Ana 2--Jerry Aschoff threw a three-hitter, striking out nine, to lead Villa Park (9-11, 3-6) at Santa Ana. Trent Eyes had two RBIs for Villa Park. Santa Ana is 10-9, 5-4.

Santa Ana Valley 14, El Modena 1--Adolf Reyes and David Solis each had four hits to lead Santa Ana Valley (2-7, 3-14) at El Modena. Solis and Javier Pindea each had three RBIs. Scott Crosby (1-4) went the distance, striking out seven, for the victory. Crosby also had three hits and an RBI.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 12, Brea-Olinda 3--Luis Medina had three hits with an RBI and pitched a five-hitter to lead Anaheim (10-8, 6-3) at Boysen Park. Medina (2-0) struck out five. Tony Kren had two RBIs and Sam Serna had two hits for Anaheim, which had 14 hits. Brea-Olinda is 4-13-1, 2-5-1.

Valencia 4, Savanna 2 (9 innings)--Anthony Davis doubled home a run in the top of the ninth, and Ben Reddel later squeezed him home to lift Valencia (10-5-1, 6-2-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 7, Costa Mesa 6--Laguna Beach built a 7-3 lead, then held off Costa Mesa for the victory at Laguna Beach. Danny Lane (2-2) went the distance, striking out three. Lane also had 3 hits, including a home run, and 3 RBIs.

Laguna Hills 3, Woodbridge 2--Ron Kortman (4-4) pitched 3 innings in relief for the victory. Rob Milo, the starting pitcher, had a second-inning home run for Laguna Hills (10-8, 7-2). Woodbridge is 5-13, 3-6.

Orange 8, Trabuco Hills 2--Brian Smith (6-2) threw a six-hitter and had two hits to lead visiting Orange (11-7, 7-2). Paul Maund, Tony Yandura and Smith all had RBI singles for Orange in the first inning. Orange had 15 hits. Trabuco Hills is 8-8, 4-5.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 4, Estancia 3--Monte Jones (7-2) threw a four-hitter, striking out five, to lead Tustin (13-6, 7-2) at Estancia. Jason Lavin had a double and scored two runs for Tustin. Jason White had two hits for Estancia (13-6, 6-3).

Saddleback 5, Newport Harbor 2 (10 innings)--Paul O’Hearn allowed two hits but no runs in three innings of relief and also doubled in the tie-breaking run in the top of the 10th for Saddleback (14-5, 8-1).

University 5, Corona del Mar 2--Garth Vier (3-8) threw a two-hitter and had two hits to lead University (7-13, 3-6) to its third consecutive victory.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 11, Edison 0--Derek Ogle pitched the first four innings to get the victory for Ocean View (11-7-1, 5-3-1).
