High School Baseball : Serra Puts End to Madison’s 13-Game Win Streak, 4-2

The Madison High School baseball team, which had taken over the county’s No. 1-ranking only hours earlier, had its 13-game winning streak snapped Monday afternoon in a 4-2 City Eastern League loss to host Serra.

The Warhawks (18-2, 7-1) had been ranked No. 2 all season behind Mission Bay but moved up to No. 1 in The Times’ rankings Monday afternoon. Mission Bay (16-1-1) lost its first game of the season last week.

Madison took a 1-0 lead on Pete Valdez’ solo home run in the first, but Serra (6-12, 2-6) came back to take a 3-1 lead on a three-run home run by Eric Saxton in the second inning. Gary Fadden (3-5) scattered six hits and struck out five.

“Our team has been close all year,” Serra Coach John Anella said. “We lost to Madison in extra innings the first time. Now that we’ve won a close one, it could turn us around.”

AVOCADO LEAGUE

Oceanside 6, San Marcos 5--Oceanside (7-10, 2-4) took advantage of five San Marcos errors to score six unearned runs at San Marcos. Marc Villalobos (3-2) was the loser for San Marcos (7-6-2, 2-3).

Escondido 7, Rancho Buena Vista 6--Mike Scales’ one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave Escondido (9-9, 3-3) the victory over Rancho Buena Vista (7-9, 3-2). Scales (2-2) also worked out of a two-on, one-out situation to preserve a tie in the top of the seventh.

San Pasqual 6, Ramona 5 (9 innings)--Jimmy Clayton singled in Alfredo Amador with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lift San Pasqual (8-7, 4-1) past Ramona (8-6, 2-3). Kevin Herde (4-3) won in relief and added two hits and an RBI.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

St. Augustine 5, Lincoln 3--Jim Bitler’s three-run triple highlighted a five-run third-inning rally for host St. Augustine (7-9, 4-3). Brad Gennaro (1-1) struck out 10 with no walks in his first start of the season. Freddie Stokes had three hits and three stolen bases for Lincoln (3-13, 2-6).

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Monte Vista 4, Mt. Miguel 3--Vern Mullis had two hits and an RBI and also went pitched four innings to pick up the victory as host Monte Vista (10-9, 3-4) beat Mt. Miguel (4-12, 3-4). Ed Poulson added two RBIs for Monte Vista, which led, 4-0, after three innings.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Torrey Pines 6, Fallbrook 2--Torrey Pines (16-2, 3-2) scored all its runs in the third inning at Fallbrook, highlighted by Bobby Kennedy’s two-run single. Scott Mirandon struck out six en route to the complete-game victory. There were five double plays and one triple play. Fallbrook is 11-6, 3-2.

Mt. Carmel 10, Vista 1--Mark VanAelstyn hit a three-run home run in the first inning for Mt. Carmel (13-9, 3-1) over host Vista (8-10-1, 2-3). Joey Brownholtz (7-1) went four innings to pick up the victory.
