Roundup : Leonhardt Tosses a No-Hitter for Hilltop, 10-1

Brian Leonhardt made sure his first victory of the season was memorable.

The Hilltop High School pitcher, 0-5 entering Tuesday’s game, threw a no-hitter to defeat visiting Marian, 10-1, in a Metro-South Bay League baseball game.

Leonhardt, who struck out six, allowed a run in the sixth inning when Marian’s Mike Jeremiah reached first on an error, advanced to second on a passed ball, to third on a sacrifice and scored on a wild pitch.

Joe Calabria hit a home run with one on and drove in another run to lead Hilltop (3-10 overall, 2-3 in league play). Brett Butterfield and Chad Boyd also had two RBIs each.

Marian is 3-13 and 1-5.

In other Metro games:

Sweetwater 5, Montgomery 0--Benjamin Gil (5-2) pitched a two-hitter and was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Sweetwater (10-9, 4-2). Gill, who struck out four, allowed a hit in the first and another in the fourth. Teammate Juan Price was 2 for 2 with 3 runs scored. Montgomery is 9-5 and 3-2.

Chula Vista 14, Southwest 0--Center fielder J.J. Rodriguez had two hits, walked three times and drive in four runs for Chula Vista (8-10, 5-1). Mark Krekleberg contributed a home run. Southwest fell to 1-15 and 0-6.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

La Jolla 8, Mission Bay 6 (10 innings)--Second-ranked Mission Bay (16-2-1, 6-2) lost its second consecutive 10-inning game. La Jolla (14-5, 6-2) forged a tie for the league lead by scoring five runs in the 10th inning and then held off a rally in the bottom of the 10th. Sean Hecker had the key hit, a single with the bases loaded to drive in two runs, for La Jolla. Brent Woodall (6-1) picked up the victory and Sean Rees (7-1) took the loss.

St. Augustine 8, Christian 2--Jim Bitler went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs to help St. Augustine improve to 8-9 and 5-3. Mark Jackson (2-0) threw a two-hitter. Christian is 1-14 and 1-7.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Madison 8, Morse 2--After being upset by Serra on Monday, top-ranked Madison got back on the winning track. Left-hander Devon Fitzmaurice (9-0) went the distance, allowing 5 hits, striking out 6 and walking none. Albert Mendiola was 2 for 4, including a two-run single in a five-run third, for Madison (18-2, 7-1). Morse is 10-9 and 4-5.

Patrick Henry 8, Point Loma 6--Mike Chapman went the distance and struck out five for Patrick Henry (9-7, 4-3). Lance Lowrey of Henry was 2 for 3, scored twice and drove in a run. Point Loma is 7-10 and 2-6.

Mira Mesa 4, Serra 1--Dan Tyler drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the top of the sixth inning to break open a tight game. Mira Mesa improved to 13-5 and 5-3, and Serra fell to 6-13 and 2-7.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

Kearny 8, University City 3--Senior John Smith picked up his first win of the season for Kearny (7-10-1, 3-5). Smith struck out six in going the distance. Scott DuPont of Kearny went 3 for 4 with an RBI. University City is 7-10 and 1-6.

USDHS 10, Clairemont 3--Left-hander Matt Siesel (5-4) pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight for USDHS (10-7, 5-2). Teammate Duke Gonzalez hit a two-run home run in the third inning. Clairemont is 5-12 and 2-6.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Mt. Miguel 3, Santana 1--Calvin Clements pitched his first complete game of the season as Mt. Miguel upset fourth-ranked Santana on the road. Devin Rainer had the game-winning hit with a run-scoring double in the third inning for Mt. Miguel (5-12, 4-4). Santana is 14-5 and 5-3.

Grossmont 12, Monte Vista 1--Grossmont had four home runs in the victory at Monte Vista. Freshman Todd Cady hit a grand slam in the first inning and John Ichhorst added a solo shot in the first for Grossmont (10-6, 5-1). Mike Ramsay and Mike Rendina added three-run homers for Grossmont. Monte Vista is 10-10 and 3-5.

El Cajon Valley 6, El Capitan 4--Mike Edison went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and scored twice to lead El Cajon Valley (1-15, 1-6) to its first official victory of the season after forfeiting four games because of an ineligible player. Zak Salmon was 2 for 4 with two doubles to lead El Capitan (8-8, 3-4).

Helix 10, Valhalla 1--Dan Tiumalu went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI to lead third-ranked Helix (14-2, 7-0) at home. Valhalla is 5-13 and 1-6.
