College Baseball : Canyons Clinches WSC Title, 11-6

Sandy Sreden’s first start of the year for Canyons was hardly an easy outing. Sreden served up four home runs but survived to record a complete-game seven-hitter as Canyons clinched the title of the Western State Conference Southern Division with an 11-6 victory Thursday over visiting Santa Monica.

Sreden (1-0) struck out six and walked three. The Cougars (27-5, 19-2 in conference play) led, 5-3, before erupting for five runs in the seventh inning. Don Pedersen and Randy Cooper each drove in runs with singles and Jeff Flesher, who was 4 for 4, belted a three-run home run.

Pierce 15, Moorpark 14--Jim Doushgounian’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of 10th inning gave the host Brahmas the win in a Western State Conference game.

With one out in the 10th, Tim McDonnell, David Clemons and Paul Plyer eached walked to load the bases. McDonnell scored on Doushgounian’s sacrifice fly ahead of the throw from right fielder Tom Aguilar.

Pierce (12-17, 5-16) sent the game into extra innings with a two-run rally in the ninth. Jason Heckathorn’s two-out double scored Plyer and Doushgounian with the tying runs. The Brahmas had an opportunity to win on the play, but Jim Brasher was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first.

Moorpark (8-20, 3-18) scored five runs in the ninth to take a 14-12 lead. John Wood’s two-run, two-out single gave the Raiders the edge after Chris Johnson’s three-run homer tied the score.

Corey Aurand hit solo homers in the fourth and fifth for Moorpark and teammate Al Kalig added a solo homer in the eighth. Mark Kueck hit a two-run home run for Pierce.

Valley 17, Mission 10--Eric Vargas was 3 for 5 with four RBIs and Sean Thompson was 3 for 6 with three RBIs, sparking the visiting Monarchs (13-16-1, 10-8-1) to a Southern California Conference win at Bluebird Field.

Vargas hit a three-run homer during Valley’s six-run fourth inning. Mike Yeaman’s two-run homer in the third gave Mission (7-22-1, 6-13) a brief 6-4 lead.
