The Chapman College women’s softball team was awarded a bid to the NCAA Division II regionals Monday.

Chapman (34-24, 9-11), ranked 13th in Division II, is one of 16 teams awarded bids. The Panthers will face Cal State Bakersfield (46-8, 15-3), ranked second in Division II, in the first round of the Western Regional Saturday in Bakersfield. Sacramento State (54-9) will play Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (30-23) in the other regional game.

Chapman is led by senior outfielders Kirsten Lewis (.344) and Sally Meyer (.324) and freshmen pitchers Cheri Schreck (13-2, 0.62 earned-run average) and Jacki Blake (13-8, 1.25 ERA).

This will be Chapman’s second appearance in the NCAA playoffs. The Panthers were eliminated in the first day of regional play in 1984.

The regional champion will advance to the NCAA Division II nationals at Sacramento State May 13-15.
