High School Baseball : Chatsworth Captures Title, 6-5

It did not come easily, but Chatsworth wrapped up the West Valley League title Wednesday with an eight-inning, come-from-behind, 6-5 victory over Taft at Chatsworth. This is the eighth consecutive season in which the Chancellors have either won or shared the title.

Art Lowe’s two-out single in the eighth drove in Derek Wallace and gave the Chancellors their 19th consecutive victory.

It was incorrectly reported Thursday that Richie Shapiro of Taft High hit a home run against Chatsworth on Wednesday. The home run was hit by Jason Shapiro (no relation). It was his fourth.

Chatsworth (20-1, 12-0 in league play), which tied for the league title in 1987 and ‘84, trailed by scores of 3-0, 4-1 and 5-4.

Wallace (7-0) notched the win in relief of starter Shawn Bowen. Richie Shapiro was 3 for 4 with a home run for Taft (9-10, 5-7).

Canoga Park 6, El Camino Real 5--Adam Schulhofer’s two-out, bases-loaded walk in the seventh scored Adrian Garcia with the winning run in a West Valley League game at Canoga Park.

Mike Kerber pitched a complete game and Del Marine had two hits and three runs batted in for the Hunters.

Cleveland 6, Reseda 1--Kirk Surabian pitched a five-hitter in the West Valley League game at Reseda. Lance Mendel hit a home run and Mike Bergren, Mario Valencia and Tony Holiday each had two hits for the Cavaliers.

Joey Arnold was 2 for 2 and scored Reseda’s only run.

Thousand Oaks 10, Royal 9--The Lancers needed a two-out, run-scoring single in the seventh by Steve Sisco after jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

The Lancers (14-6-1, 7-2) pulled to within one game of idle Simi Valley.

Sisco hit a solo homer and Mark Skeels hit a two-run shot in the first inning, and Darren Shoen hit a two-run homer in the third.

Dan Chergey, who started and left after five with a 9-0 lead, came back to get the final three outs.

The Highlanders had six consecutive hits in the seventh.

Newbury Park 4, Channel Islands 1--Dan Smith was 3 for 4 and Dan Madsen was 2 for 3 to lead Newbury Park in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.

Pitcher Jeff Berman threw a five-hitter for the Panthers (13-11, 5-5), who jumped on Channel Islands (10-12, 5-5) for three runs in the first inning.

Camarillo 5, Westlake 3--Junior Steve Biggs pitched a five-hitter and Gil Valencia had two hits to lead Camarillo in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

Nathan Avery had two hits and scored three runs for Camarillo. With two out in the third inning, Johnny Barroso and Wesley Nathaniel hit back-to-back doubles for the deciding run.

Granada Hills 10, Birmingham 7--The Highlanders ended a two-game losing skid with a Mid-Valley League win at home.

Chris Murphy was 3 for 4 to lead the offense for Granada Hills (13-3, 9-3). Kevin Carmichael was 2 for 4.

Mike Shelofsky and Todd Richards each had two hits for Birmingham (7-9, 4-8).

Poly 16, Verdugo Hills 13--The East Valley League game at Verdugo Hills featured two grand slams in the first inning and 38 hits in the game.

Eddie Chavez’s grand slam in the top of the first gave the Parrots (16-3, 14-1) an 8-0 lead, but Verdugo Hills countered with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Chavez had five hits and teammate Harold Whiteside had four.

Fairfax 7, Sylmar 0--Fairfax scored five runs in the first inning in the East Valley League game at Fairfax.

North Hollywood 11, Hollywood 3--Steve Elbaum had three hits and Russell Greene had two hits and three RBIs to lead North Hollywood in an East Valley League game at Hollywood.

Monroe 8, Van Nuys 4--Tim Costic had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Vikings in a Mid-Valley League game at Van Nuys. Jeff Engler and Melvin Batrez each had two hits for Van Nuys.

St. Genevieve 13, Cathedral 0--The Valiants (16-2-1, 10-0-1) broke out of a mild slump with 16 hits in the Santa Fe League game at Whittier Narrows Park.

Roland De La Maza, Alfonso Gutierrez and Joe Cascione each had three hits for St. Genevieve. Mike Rohrbough (8-1) pitched a two-hitter.

Highland Hall 18, West Valley Christian 3--Seth Ernsdorf had three hits and six RBIs to lead the Hawks to a Westside League win.
